• Have you not given a thought to the misconceptions of that man, whom Allah the Exalted had granted the sovereignty of a kingdom, when he argued with Iebra'heim [alaihissalam] about his Sustainer —

کیاآپ(ﷺ)نے اس شخص کے رویئے /تصورکے متعلق غور کیا ہے جس نے ابراہیم(علیہ السلام)سے  ان کے رب کے متعلق بحث مباحثہ کیا تھا اس حیثیت میں کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اسے اس ملک کا حکمران بنایا تھا

  • When Iebra'heim [alaihissalam] told him; "My Sustainer Lord is the One Who originates life to things and causes death to living".

جب ابراہیم(علیہ السلام)نے اس سے کہا تھا’’میرے رب وہ ہیں جو حیات کو ظہور دیتے ہیں اور وہ ذی حیات کوموت دیتے ہیں‘‘

  • He (the King) argued saying; "I also cause life and I cause death".

اس(بادشاہ)نے جواب دیا’’میں حیات دیتا ہوں اور میں موت دیتا ہوں‘‘۔

  • Iebra'heim [alaihissalam] [instead of telling him niceties and subtleties] asked him; "It is the fact that Allah the Exalted raises the Sun from the East. Thereby to prove yourself right you raise her from the West".

انہوں(ابراہیم علیہ السلام)نے کہا’’اگر آپ کا یہ گمان ہے تو جان لیں کہ اللہ تعالیٰ سورج کو مشرق سے نمودار کرتے ہیں توآپ اسے مغرب سے نمودارکریں‘‘

  • Thereat, this simple fact stunned-silenced the one who had disavowed.

تو وہ جس نے اللہ تعالیٰ کے وجود کا انکار کیا تھا مبہوت اور لاجواب ہو کر رہ گیا۔

  • And be mindful that Allah the Exalted does not guide [against their own will/considered decision] people who are mischievous-distorters/substitute facts with conjectures-myths-concocted stories. [2:258]

مطلع رہو؛اللہ تعالیٰ ان لوگوں کو جوحقیقت کے منافی باتوں سے بگاڑ پیدا کرنے والے ہیں ہدایت نہیں دیتے۔(البقرۃ۔۲۵۸)

  • Or have you given a thought about that man who while journeying arrived near a township which was in devastated-depopulated state.

یا اس کے مقابل اس شخص کےانداز فکر پر غور نہیں کیا جو ایک بستی کے پاس سے گزر رہا تھا جوویران اور اجاڑ بےآباد حالت میں تھی۔

  • He pondered-questioned himself; "What would be the mode and manner when Allah the Exalted will revive-resurrect this township after its death?"

اس نے خود کلامی کرتے ہوئے سوچا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ اس بستی کو اس کی موت کے بعدکب اور کیسے ذی حیات فرمائیں گے۔

  • Thereby, responding his curiosity, Allah the Exalted caused his death for a period of hundred solar years and afterwards He the Exalted revived him to life.

اس کے تجسس کے سبب اللہ تعالیٰ نے اسے ایک سو سالوں کے لئے موت سے ہمکنار کر دیا۔بعد ازاں اس مدت انہوں نے اسے حالت حیات میں بحال کر دیا۔

  • He the Exalted asked: "How long a period have you stayed here?".

انہوں نے اس پوچھا’’تو کتنا عرصہ یہاں رہا؟‘‘۔

  • He (the wayfarer) replied: "I stayed here for a day or may be only a part of it".

اس نے جوب دیا’’میں یہاں ایک دن یا دن کا کچھ حصہ  رہا ہوں‘‘۔

  • He the Exalted told him: "No, your assessment is not correct; the fact is t you have stayed for a period of hundred solar years.

انہوں نے جواب دیا’’نہیں؛حقیقت میں تو ایک سو شمسی سال یہاں رہا ہے۔

  • Therefore, to perceive phenomenon of resurrection, you look at your food and drink; it has not become worsened.

اس حقیقت کے ادراک کے لئے تو اپنے طعام اور اپنے پانی کو دیکھ،اس نے اپنے  آپ کو عمررسیدہ/بوسیدہ نہیں کیا۔

اور تو اپنے گدھے کی جانب دیکھ۔(تاکہ تجھے دکھائیں مردے کو کیسے حیات نو دیتے ہیں)۔

  • --Be informed, the purpose of all this is to render you a Sign for the people to perceive and understand death and resurrection--.

اورتاکہ  ہم جناب تجھے  ایک نشانی بنا دیں جو لوگوں کو موت اور بعد از موت حیات دئیے جانے کو سمجھا دے۔

  • And keep eye on the bones to see how We raise them as skeleton —

اور ان (مردہ گدھے کی بوسیدہ )ہڈیوں پر نگاہ رکھ،دیکھ ہم انہیں کیسے  بطور ڈھانچہ کھڑا کرتے ہیں۔

  • Thereby, as soon the resurrection phenomenon became self evident for him on watching demonstration of revival of decayed bones in living donkey of him, he said, "I  have the absolute knowledge—

اس عملی مظاہرے سے جوں ہی انہوں(اللہ تعالیٰ)نے اس کے لئے   کیسے دوبارہ حیات دی جانے کو متمیز کر دیا تو اس نے کہا’’میں حتمی طور پر جانتا ہوں۔

  • That Allah the Exalted has indeed eternally infinite power-command and control over each and all things and phenomena". [2:259]

کہ یقیناًاللہ تعالیٰ ہر ایک شئے اور معاملے کو پیمانوں میں مقید کرنے پر ہمیشہ سے قادر ہیں۔‘‘

This Frame containing two Ayahs is one of the examples of superb use of literary technique, termed Juxtaposition, in Qur’ān. In this technique two or more ideas, places, characters, phenomena, and their actions are placed side by side in a narrative, for the purpose of developing comparisons and contrasts.  It is employed in order to surprise the readers and evoke their interest, by means of developing a comparison between two dissimilar things by placing them side by side. The comparison drawn adds vividness to a given image, and controls the pacing of the narrative.

This man did not pass by the ruins of a township in a neglectful manner. He reflected, and posed  to himself a question as to what might be the way Allah the Exalted will raise this after its death. This is called: تفكر—desire to know the mode of a reality.

: It is an interrogative noun. Interrogative is defined as the request of understanding something that is unknown before. This interrogative noun is used 28 times in Grand Qur’ān. Lexicons indicate that in addition to strong exclamation it denotes how, when, where and wherefrom and is also used adverbially. It is thus evident that he did not challenge or expressed lack of belief about the given information but to know the how and when aspect in view of the ground realities he mentioned. 

He was made to die to answer his query. After hundred years, he was revived. On resurrection, he was asked to tell the time he had stayed nearby that ruined town. His answer was that it was just a day or some part of it. He did not lie; it was his opinion/perception, since perception of time depends on the recording of events one after the other, the last event immediately before his death was in his mind. On revival of life/resurrection many would have the same perception. He spoke the guessed idea/ perception. But that was not the reality. He was told that he had stayed there for one hundred years; and to comprehend that he was asked to look at his food and drink, which did not show any sign of aging. He was further asked to look at his donkey which were nothing but old bones. According to the perception/knowledge of the man, absence of any aging sign on food and drink would have supported his estimate of time, since he could not recognize the bones of his donkey and could think that during sleep donkey might have had gone somewhere. Now if the same bones in front of his eyes are raised as donkey, and he recognized his donkey it would have become clear to him that he had stayed there for 100 years. He was asked to keep eye on the bones and see them getting together as skeleton and then flesh appeared on it; and he recognized his donkey which made things distinct to him.

The major difference between matter and life is the perception of time, fourth dimension of the universe. Perception of time is dependent upon activity/movement/change of surroundings and its persistent and constant recording on the memory of human beings. Death stops the time for the dead since the faculty of hearing and seeing are restrained by death. Hearing and seeing keep recording things in the memory which create perception of time. Matter does not have perception of time. By quoting this incidence, information has been given that food and drinks can be saved for hundred years without deterioration/signs of aging.

The purpose was to make this man: a piece of information/knowledge for people to understand the matter and life; and death and life. It may be of interest that in the creation of human being also, it is the bones which are developed first and then flesh is clothed on them.

The Qur’ān narrates a parable in this Ayah, in which a man happened to pass through hamlet – a place where people died centuries ago.

Parable is a figure of speech, which presents a short story, typically with a moral lesson at the end. You often have heard stories from your elders, such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and All is Vanity. These are parables, because they teach you a certain moral lesson. Parable is, in fact, a Greek word, parable, which means “comparison.” It is like a succinct narrative, or a universal truth that uses symbolism, simile, and metaphor, to demonstrate the moral lesson intended to be taught. Like analogy, we find the use of parables in verse and prose, specifically in religious texts

Function

Parable is a great teaching tool, because it often uses symbolic imagery and metaphors that the audience can easily recognize. Thus, the storyteller can convey complicated moral truths in such a way that they become relatable and understandable to one’s own life. Sometimes listeners have to discern the lesson that a parable conveys, and the audience also participates in arriving at the conclusion in this way. Generally, parables help readers understand philosophical issues or moral lessons in relatable terms, while tellers could lead them in a better way to apply such principles in their daily lives.
