The High Road — the most direct way to destination — the most ethical course of action.

: It occurs twice in ayah 1:06 and 37:118. It is an Adjectival Phrase, the direct object of the preceding verb, the object and purpose sought in the prayer.

  • Our Sustainer Lord Ar'Reh'maan! You the Exalted do keep guiding us upon the High road that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [01:06]

  • And We guided both of them while journeying upon the High road that keeps leading safely and straight to the destination of peace and tranquility. [37:118]

: Its Root is: ص ر ط . Noun: Definite with definite article أل; masculine, singular; accusative-direct object of verb. The basic perception infolded  in the Root is to swallow some thing whole without chewing. It means and refers to the passage, path, hardened and sharply evident surface for journeying to an intended point of destination. While journeying on the path, one keeps engulfing the distance to the point of destination.

: Active Participle; Definite with definite article أل; masculine; accusative [Form-X]. Its Root is: ق و م. The basic perception infolded in it is of standing, straight position on feet as distinct from sitting, reclining or lying. In physical terms, it is the most stable, established, and mindful state of strength, alertness and equilibrium which other postures of sitting, reclining and lying flat lack. This state grants an ability to quickly react and respond to a sudden threat/attack. Balance and equilibrium strengthens a thing granting it stability, prominence and durability. Balance and equilibrium also create a stationary state. This Root thus also conveys the meaning of staying somewhere. And the point of staying becomes a place of gathering. Balance and equilibrium grants a state of peace and tranquility. In whatever shade the words derived from this Root are used, the perception of balance and equilibrium, which is the primary condition of standing erect, shall predominantly prevail.

Keeping in view the basic perception of its Root and its nature of being a derivative noun from Form-X verb, it is inappropriate to render its meaning as "straight". We are taught that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line; but in the case of electric fields, the lines of force (flux lines) may not follow the shortest distance, as the shortest distance does not always represent the path of least resistance. The resistance can be caused by our staunch enemy Ieb'lees:

  • Ieb'lees said: "Your Majesty has since condemned and ruined me because of human being;

  • I swear, I will certainly sit in ambush for them on the High road defined by You the Exalted; [7:16]

Active Participle signifies a person or thing-object to which existence of a particular state or effect is attributed. Due to this peculiarity, it is also referred as Verbal Adjective. Used as an adjective, the Active Participle acts as descriptive term. Functioning as adjectives, Active Participles reflect the gender of noun that they modify.

Therefore, the adjectival phrase signifies: The High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility:

  • Know it; Allah the Exalted calls towards the abode of tranquility, peace and joy;

  • And He the Exalted keeps guiding him, about whom He the Exalted so decides, towards the High Road: Course that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [10:25]

: The definite article is of type: الْعَهْدُ الذِّهْنِيُّ: it refers to a thing already known to the speaker and the listener. The fact that we have the previous knowledge as monotheist believers is evident that we alternatively describe it:

  • This High Road is the Course which was followed by those upon whom You the Exalted have showered blessings.

We further elaborate it by negative contrast:

  • This Path is other than of those who made themselves liable to criminal cognizance/arrest; And nor is of those who are the neglectful wanderers lost in directionless bewilderment.

We have immediately before this prayer stated:  You the Exalted are the One and Only Whom we presently and henceforth solely and exclusively owe and demonstrate allegiance and servitude. This course of conduct in human history is described by the term the High Road: the most direct way to a place - the most ethical course of action:

  • (Easa alahissalam further stated) "Indeed Allah the Exalted is my Sustainer-Lord and the Sustainer Lord of you people. Therefore, be subservient and allegiant to Him alone.

  • This exclusive servitude and allegiance is the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility." [3:51; 19:36]

  • Indeed Allah is He Who is the Sustainer-Lord of me and the Sustainer Lord of you people, therefore, you people be subservient/allegiant to Him alone;

  • This exclusive servitude and allegiance is the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility." [43:64]

Those who submit not as subjects exclusively for Allah the Exalted are criminals and shall be treated as such on the Day of Judgment and Requital; and they will be reminded of what they were directed and told in their worldly life:

  • And it will be ordered, "O you the Criminals, you get yourself separated away; [36:59]

  • Had I not enjoined upon you people, O you the posterity of Adam, that you must not be allegiant to the Shai'taan;

  • It is a fact that he is contentious, antagonistic enemy for you people. [36:60]

  • And that you people were directed: "Be the subject/subservient/allegiant to Me alone;

  • This exclusive servitude and allegiance is the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility." [36:61]

Today we are questioned and explicitly informed:

  • Look! On what basis you keep denying to believe, particularly in the circumstances when the Aa'ya'at: Verbal unitary passages of the Book of Allah the Exalted are recited - read out to you word by word;

  • And the Messenger of Him the Exalted: Muhammad [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] is present amongst you people----is perpetually the revivalist and admonisher amongst you people [ref 6:19].

  • And should someone diligently and sincerely resorts to Allah the Exalted

  • Henceforth, he certainly got guided towards the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [3:101]

  • Thereby, as for those who believed in Allah the Exalted; and they diligently and sincerely resorted to Allah the Exalteddiligently remained firmly bound with it: Qur'aan:

  •  Consequently, He the Exalted will soon enter them under the umbrella of His mercy and bounty-abundance.

  • And He the Exalted will guide them [with Grand Qur'aan] towards Him upon the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [4:175]

  • O you the People of the Book! Our Messenger has since come to you people;

  • He makes manifestly evident and distinct for you people much of that part of the Book which you people kept concealing by withholding from public. And he ignores quite many of your concealments from individually elaborating to every one.

  • Visible Light: guarantor and sustainer of life and self illuminating book: Grand Qur'aan has certainly just reached to you from Allah the Exalted. [5:15]

  • Allah guides with it, Grand Qur'aan; the pursuits that lead to eternal peace, whoever diligently sought the approval and appreciation of Him the Exalted.

  • And he the Messenger moves them out of the depths of darkness into the Visible light: Enlightenment: the Grand Qur'aan with the prior approval-permission of Him the Exalted.

  • And he guides them towards the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [5:16]

  • And as for those are concerned who publicly contradicted Our Aa'ya'aat: Verbal Passages of Qur'aan:

  • They are deaf and dumb; they are engulfed in the layers of darkness..

  • Should Allah the Exalted resolve about deliberate straying of someone, He would let him lost in forgetfulness.

  • And should He the Exalted resolve about rightness of someone; He would put him on the High Road: that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [6:39]

Allah the Exalted has delineated each subject and concept by relating it to ideological beliefs and actions. We are told that what we have stated and prayed for are the foremost meanings of the phrase: i.e., . "Be the subjects/subservient/allegiants to Me alone". Some excessively argumentative people might have argued that it is related and restricted to theology - faith only. But it signifies a path to adopt as course - movement - forward steps - a distance that needs to be covered - it is persistent journey with thriving life in progressing and ever changing times, towards the Destination - Original abode. Thereby this High Road is but a Code of Conduct:

  • Therefore, should Allah the Exalted decide about someone that He might guide him; He the Exalted would render his chest open-perceptible for the Code of Conduct Islam.

  • And should He the Exalted decide about someone that He might let him lost in heedlessness; He renders his chest feel sinking in squeezing like felt if he is climbing into the Sky.

  • Like this Allah the Exalted renders brain muddling/fidgeting filthy state upon those who purposely do not accept. [6:125]

  • And this Code of Conduct Islam is the High Road; ordained by your Sustainer Lord, that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility.

  • Our Majesty has certainly illustrated Aa'ya'at: the verbal passages of Grand Qur'aan by demarcating, categorizing, delineating and individuating all aspects for the people who personally pursue actively to comprehend, secure in memory, take admonition, and relate. [6:126]

Now we find that: is equated and defined as: Islam: Universal Constitution: System of Law: Operational-Conduct Code determined by Allah the Exalted, the Supreme Sovereign and Lawmaker for all that exists: submission to the discipline establishing orderly state of peace, security, tranquility, harmony and dynamic balance for all. The word: is a verbal noun of Form-IV which is Causative - Causing someone or something to perform the action of Measure I. It encompasses all actions of high moral and ethical import in every aspect of day to day social life:

  • Further, that you should not approach the inherited property of certain orphan; except handling it in the best manner, until he might attain the age of his full strength: age of marriage/Nikah.

  • And you should equitably discharge the liability of measure, and maintain the weighing scale on exacting balance/equilibrium."

  • Our Majesty does not impose burden, responsibility, obligation upon a person except according to her capacity: physical and mental ability; scope, capability, strength, practicability, access and tolerance.

  • "And that when you have said something, thereby, you must do justice notwithstanding it hurts the interest of a near relative.

  • And discharge your promise and commitment made with Allah the Exalted.

  • These are the commands He the Exalted has bound you people with.

  • These are mentioned that perhaps you might conveniently remember, recall and relate. [6:152]

  • And to inform you people that He the Exalted has declared this course of conduct as "My High road", it keeps leading safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility.

  • Therefore, you are directed to consciously and affectionately follow this direct route.

  • And you should not pursue many divergent courses; if you do pursue a certain other course it might diverge along with you away from His High road.

  • This is the command He the Exalted has bound you people with.

  • It is mentioned so that you people might remain heedful, cautious and avoid unrestrained conduct, in reverence and fear of Allah the Exalted." [6:153]

The foregoing information about the term enables us to understand it with mathematical precision: = . = = Certain actions. The exalted Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam is advised to further explain it to us:

  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce, "As for me, it is a fact that my Sustainer Lord had guided me on the High Road: perpetually prescribed code of conduct, more famously known as the Community of Iebra'heim [alai'his'slaam], the ever sincere, upright staunch monotheist believer.

  • And be mindful; He was never considered and identified as part of the Idolaters-polytheists of his times." [6:161]

  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce - make it public for humanity:

  • "It is a fact that my Sa'laat: time bound Protocol of servitude and allegiance, and all my physical conduct-protocols,

  • And my entire life and my death

  • Were and are administered exclusively and solely for Allah the Exalted, the Sustainer Lord of the Universes-all that exists. [6:162]

Thus the term: = . = = Certain actions =   = . One of the unique literary feature of the Divine Discourse is:  تَصْرِيفٌ : Perspectives; turning - alternating the direction; shifting one state/condition to another.  It helps the reader to completely grasp the relevant concept and interrelationship of terms and its features around which the concept revolves. We are earlier told the relationship of : and :

  • Know the certain fact; Ad-Deen: Universal Constitution: System of Law: Operational-Conduct Code determined by Allah the Exalted, the Supreme Sovereign and Lawmaker for all that exists, is Islam: submission to the discipline establishing orderly state of peace, security, tranquility, harmony and dynamic balance for all. [refer 3:19]

Iebra'heim alai'his'slaam is the honorific Father of Muslims. He, the chosen Friend of Allah the Exalted, honoured us by assigning us this name.

  • Execute the Procedural Code of Conduct of the community of your Father, Iebra'heim [alai'his'slaam]

  • He named you people as a community "the Muslims" in aforetimes, [see him so designating-2:128] and in it, Grand Qur'aan, you are also so identified and distinguished by this name. [Ref 22:78]

The salient features of: are again summarized:

  • And they the People of the Book were commanded not but that they may be subservient and allegiant subjects for Allah the Exalted by remaining exclusively and continuously loyal to the Operative Code of life prescribed by Him the Exalted.

  • And that they might steadfastly maintain the Institution of As-sa'laat: Time Bound Protocol of Servitude and allegiance; and should pay Az-zaka'at: financial liability for economic uplift of society.

  • Remain mindful; this is the straightly settled permanent Constitution - Perpetuated Code - Operative System of Life. [98:05]

The word: which is an Adjective Resembling participle (الصفة المشبهة): Indefinite; singular; masculine; accusative is the circumstantial adverb in above quoted Ayah 6:161. The Adjective resembling participle is a noun derived from an intransitive verb in order to signify the one who establishes an action or state with the meaning of permanence, intrinsic. This is typical and unique circumstance of the galaxy of human men who are referred by: the chosen, dignified and exalted above all physical realm sincere allegiants of Allah the Supreme Sovereign of Universes.

  • Ieb'lees said: "My Sustainer Lord! Your Majesty has since condemned and ruined me because of human being;

  • I swear, I will certainly make for them fascination in the Earth [by false hopes and desires] and of course I will certainly distract and thereby ruin them, all collectively. [15:39]

  • Exception to my promised endeavour against humanity is only with regard to those of them who are exclusively chosen as absolutely sincere allegiants of You the Exalted."[15:40]

  • He the Exalted remarked: "This course of exclusive and sincere allegiance is the high road that is incumbent upon Me to manifest for them. [15:41]

Please notice that Ieb'lees had used: which is a Passive participle: Definite; sound plural; masculine; accusative; مصدر-اِخْلاَصٌ Verbal noun. Its opposite is: those who act as sincere allegiants.

  • And beyond an iota of doubt, you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] are certainly inviting them towards the High Road that leads to their Sustainer Lord. [23:73]

  • And indeed those who do not accept-believe in the Hereafter:

  • They are certainly the deviators from the High Road. [23:74]

  • And swearing by the Grand Qur'aan, peculiarity of which is that it contains and grants insight to the invisible/hidden/secreted/infolded matters/things/pearls of wisdom [disclosed in its Aa'ya'aat-17:39],

  • People should know the fact, that you Muhammad [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] are certainly the Last from amongst those appointed and sent as the Messengers; [36:03]

  • The second news is that it is a certain fact that you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] have always been upon the High Road that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [36:04]

  • Let it be on record that in the same manner: through Angel Messenger and directly when you visited Us beyond the Skies, Our Majesty has communicated to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] the Life Breathing and Sustaining Guarantor: Vital Principle: Grand Qur'aan, a promised affair of Ours-divine guidance being exclusively Our task.

  • However, in your past life you were not in habit of pursuing-wishing the Book and nor for acknowledging it.

  • But We have declared it: Grand Qur'aan as the Visible Light-the Sustainer of Life.

  • We guide with this Grand Qur'aan anyone from Our subjects for whom We so intend-decide;

  • And beyond an iota of doubt you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] are certainly guiding them towards the High Road that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [42:52]

  • This is the High Road of Allah the Exalted; the One and Only

  • Whatever exists in the Skies and whatever exists in the Earth are subservient-dependant-subjects for Him the Exalted.

  • Unquestionably towards Allah are returned the matters for finalization/disposal/decision. [42:53]

  • Therefore, you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] consciously keep yourself confined/ restrained/restricted with the One, Grand Qur'aan, which has since been communicated to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam, for guiding people].

  • It is a certain fact that you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] have always been upon the High Road that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility. [43:43]

Lastly the meaning and perception of term: is defined in nutshell as literally pursuing the footsteps of the exalted Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam:

  • [You the Messenger Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam pronounce] "And it is a certain fact that Knowledge about the Appointed Moment is a guarded secret only with Allah the Exalted.

  • Therefore, you people should not henceforth be curious and questing about itLast Moment; and you people are directed to sincerely and affectionately follow me [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] in letter and spirit without there being in between third party interference

  • This act of sincere and affectionate following is the High Road that leads safely and stably to the destination of peace and tranquility." [43:61]

  • And you people let not the Shai'taan hinder you people keep journeying on High Road, [since he is determined to sit there to divert you by deceptive conjectural fascinating myths-7:16]

  • It is a fact that he is contentious, antagonistic enemy for you people.". [43:62]

The classical and later exegeses that attribute the elided direct object of imperative verb: to Allah the Exalted have patently erred. Allah the Exalted is not the object of this verb since the irreducible feature of verb and its Root: ت ب ع is to practically follow by will, design and affection in such manner that one moves or walks behind remaining adjacent to the one being followed/pursued so that there is no third in between the follower and the one being followed. "تبيع": It refers a calf walking behind his mother. The striking feature, individuality and peculiarity of this Root is the practical and physical aspect of following in action.

The perception and meanings infolded in Root: "ت ب ع" are distinct and absolutely different from that infolded in the Root: "ط و ع" which is translated by English word "obey"; and Root: "ت ب ع" by English word "follow" by most of the writers. This is how both the Roots are inadvertently/incorrectly brought closer and at par, as if they both convey similar meanings. English word "Obey" means and conveys the perception "to do as told; be controlled by somebody or something" and the word "follow" means "to obey something, act in accordance with something or instructions and directions given by somebody else". It is thus evident that English word "obey" and "follow" are in proximity of synonymous and both refer to an act while Arabic Roots "ت ب ع" and  "ط و ع" are not synonymous and are distinct from each other.

Arabic language is a scientific language and its Roots enfold all physical/scientific realities and facts relating both to matter and life. A deliberate act of practically and physically following is the result of will/decision and it can take physical execution only by retrieving data, information, instruction, injunction or saying already and previously saved in the memory. A physical act by one's own will and decision/choice reflects and demonstrates his acceptance and liking of the concept and purposes which that act will or is expected to yield.

The basic perception infolded in Root "ط و ع" is to accept an idea, or word, command, direction, injunction,  saying, or verbal and written communication, wholeheartedly and affectionately by will and personal choice without  external pressure/force/fear/ compulsion/coercion. The perception and meanings infolded in the Root: "ت ب ع" is the physical demonstration of executing that accepted thing in letter and spirit, exactly in the manner as is told; to follow and move step by step, dot by dot, word by word; move and follow on the footprints of the one being followed. Nothing should intervene; including ones passions, interests, preconceived notions, desires and conveniences, between the follower and the followed, whereby one will satisfy and implement the perception of the Root  and shall thus be:  the one who acted exactly on that which he had willfully and affectionately accepted.

Root "ط و ع" has a theoretical/ideological aspect while: "ت ب ع" has practical/physical aspect/connotation. It means translating/ implementing into action what was accepted. This will also show and prove to others the truthfulness, faithfulness and sincerity of the person that he had accepted that concept/idea/fact/saying/news/Book truly and wholeheartedly. In sequence/time frame: "ت ب ع" is after "ط و ع" and not conversely.

Hence: is to follow the exalted Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam in letter and spirit, perceiving in our imagination that we are taking steps and progressing immediately behind him, our guide lord. The direct object of verb: is only and only the exalted Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam as we are told that Allah the Exalted now "loves" people only conditionally:

  • You the Messenger [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce: "If you people have been loving Allah the Exalted;

  • Then to demonstrate and prove it, you are instructed to heartily and diligently follow me in letter and spirit without in between there a third party intervention and influence.

  • If you acted accordingly, Allah the Exalted will in response-reciprocally love-appreciate and acknowledge you people.

  • Moreover, He the Exalted will overlook and grant forgiveness for you people for your earlier wrong-doings.

  • Remember, Allah the Exalted is the Forgiving-Overlooking and the Merciful". [3:31]
