Ibn Faris [died-1005] stated:

الخاء والواو والفاء أصلٌ واحد يدلُّ على الذُّعْرِ والفزَع. يقال خِفْتُ الشّيءَ خوفاً وخِيفة

That it leads to the perception of alarm and fear, it is said a thing faded, dimmed in fear.

 

Lane's Lexicon: He feared, or was afraid of, him, or it

 

Fear is a feeling - sensation of pain induced by perceiving danger, threat - probability of unpleasant happening. It may occur in response to a specific stimulus in the present, or in anticipation or expectation of a future threat perceived as a risk to body or life.

Fear prompts for taking cautionary means to ward off the unpleasant probability. It is different from apprehension (Root: و ج س) which is a feeling of possibility of something considered undesirable. It is also different from dread (Root: خ ش ى) which is intensive fear of something considered certain to happen.

  • We said: "You go down out of this place jointly-together.

  • Take note thenceforth whenever guidance-guide from Me would have come to you people;

  • Thereat, whoever would have followed in letter and spirit My Guidance in such manner that nothing else influences in between;

  • Thereby, fear will not overshadow-haunt such class of people.

  • Neither will they have a cause to grieve". [2:38]

  • He replied, "Indeed my position is that your going out taking him along saddens me;

  • And I worry the wolf eating him while you are negligent/unmindful of him." [12:13]

  • And when opinion-report of the peace-security or of frightening threat had come to their notice: they noised with it; made it talk of the town;

  • And had they referred it towards the Messenger [now to his recited words: Grand Qur'aan] and towards the holders of authority amongst them: Certainly those of authority would have known the veracity of such report who investigate and verify the matter in depth.

  • Take note; had there been not the bounty of Allah upon you people and His Mercy:

  •  Certainly you people barring a few would have followed the footstep of Shai'taan. [4:83]

  • The greatest terror surfacing on first blow in the Trumpet on Last Day will not grieve them;

  • And Angels will meet them face to face, they will tell "This is your Day the one which you were promised." [21:103]

  • And when Our Messengers came to Luet [alai'his'slaam] he felt distressed by their coming and felt straitened by their presence with uneasiness;

  • And they said, "Please you should not be apprehensive and nor you should grieve.

  • It is certain that we will rescue you and your household;

  • Except your wife, she is from amongst those who stay behind." [29:33]

 

  • It is true that those who said, "Our Sustainer Lord is Allah"; and thereafter they persistently kept themselves firm in this belief,

  • upon them the Angels will descend for the purpose to say, "you people may not have any fear and nor anything will make you grieve,

  • and accept congratulation for the Paradise, the one which used to be promised to you people. [41:30]

  • "O My sincere allegiants, Today there is no cause of fear for you people and nor shall you people have any cause of grief [43:68]

The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat, also known as fight-or-flight response, which in extreme cases of fear, horror and terror, can be a freeze response or paralysis.

 

We fear, an ill; through a natural aversion to it, and, from a sense, that it may happen to us: we are apprehensive, of losing a benefit; through an eager desire to obtain it, and, from a conviction that we never may: we dread, our adversary; through sentiments of esteem, when we know him our superior: we are afraid of danger; through a timid disposition.

Want of courage, makes us fear: Doubt of success, makes us apprehensive. Distrust of strength, makes us dread. Imagination itself, will, often, make us afraid.

‘Worry’ as a noun, is the thought that something bad might happen and ‘to worry’ when used as a verb is to think it will happen.
