Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

الحاء والزاء والنون أصلٌ واحد، وهو خشونة الشيء وشِدّةٌ فيه. فمن ذلكَ الحَزْن، وهو ما غلُظ من الأرض

الحَزَنُ: نقيضُ الفرَح، وهو خلافُ السُّرور.

That it signifies coarseness, roughness, crudeness in a thing and rigidity and hardness in it; it is contra. of joy, happiness, and opposite to cheerfulness.

  • And neither there is blame against those to whom, when came to you the Messenger  [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] in the hope hat you might provide them mounts, you said, "I do not find on which I could mount you people for journey". They turned away;

  • With their eyes overflowing with tears feeling sorrow for not finding a thing to contribute. [9:92]

Grief is a natural response to loss. It is the emotional suffering one feels when something or someone one loves is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief will be. The death of a loved one is often the cause of the most intense type of grief—but any loss can cause grief.

Sadness is emotional reaction to minor losses and disappointments.
