Words from this Root in the Grand Qur'aan:
a) Total occurrences: 3
b) No of constructions: 3
Lane's lexicon has given the purview of the perception
and meanings of the root mentioned in Classical Arabic Lexicons:
"He, or it, (a thing)
confined,
restricted, limited, kept close, kept within certain bounds or limits, shut up,
imprisoned, held in custody, detained, retained, restrained, withheld, debarred,
hindered, impeded, or prevented, him or it" unquote
Foretasted rendition is generalized and
can relate to many semantic fields. But the perception of the Root is
restricted for usage for specific activity of covenanting.
However, it mentions what it specifically
signifies:
أُصْرٌ
and ↓
أَصْرٌ : any bond arising from relationship,
or from a covenant or compact or contract, (Aboo-Is-hák,)
and from an oath: (ISh:) a covenant, compact, or
contract, which one does not fulfill, and for the neglecting and
breaking of which one is punished-unquote
Semantic domain: Law of Obligations—Prestation
(performance) of the obligee
A solemn agreement - covenant comes
with obligations. The parties to the covenant are
the obligor and obligee. In a covenant between the Sovereign and the
subjects, the Obligor is the Sovereign - Allah the Exalted Who offers
bestowing grace and the Subjects; the elevated Messengers and through
them the humanity, are the obligee; and the subject matter, the
prestation, is the performance.
Prestation (performance) of the obligee
is signified by:
an obligation, undertaking, promise for a
certain performance. Its irreducible feature is that it is a burden
which is uplifted or uploaded upon the obligee:
That the Root relates to Law of
Obligations - Covenant is rendered explicit:
-
Know it that when Allah the Exalted had obtained
the Pledge-Covenant-Oath of the
Chosen, Dignified and elevated Sincere Allegiants, to the effect:
-
"That whatever I
would have given to you by that time for communication to people
partly from a book and wisdom- knowledge of
invisible- infolded facts;
-
Afterwards the passage of time and having given to you all, a Messenger would have come to
you people.
This messenger is a
Testifier-Affirmer-Certifier-Sanctifier-Authenticator of that which was
with you all;
-
It will be binding for you people to
affectionately believe in him and must help him".
-
Allah the Exalted asked them:
"Have
you willingly consented-pledged to stay by it and that you have self undertaken this
prescribed prestation of Mine?"
-
They
responded: "We
have solemnly undertaken."
-
Allah
the Exalted said:
"Thereby, you people
record-testify your oath. And I also testify along with you as
being amongst witnesses [having
administered the oath]." [3:81]
This was the sublime undertaking that put
the entire humanity in time and space to an obligation of performance -
believing in and supporting the universal Messenger, characteristically
the authenticator of all that was revealed to humanity prior to his
corporeal arrival in the worldly universe.
The uplifted burden is eventually laid
off by performing what was undertaken. Since prestation - performance is
in relation to a specific person, it is only he who can lay it off:
-
They are the people who persistently follow in
action the Messenger, the Chosen and Elevated Allegiant from
amongst those who were not given the Book earlier. The peculiarity of
this Messenger is that they find him mentioned in writing
with them inscribed in Tor'aat
and In'jeel.
-
He directs them to follow the
well known norms-permanent prescribed values and forbids them from
conjectural innovations-deceits-deviations.
-
And he the Messenger
[Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam]
declares for them
permissible-lawful the things which are
decent-beneficial and nutritious;
and declares non permissible-unlawful-restrained for them the things
which are indecent and deficiently
unpropitious.
-
And he lays off from them
their prestation-burden of Covenant; And lays off the shackles of conjectural myths-widely publicized
conjectural stories which were placed upon
them.
-
Therefore,
to honour and discharge their
pledge,
those who accepted-believed in him and revered him and helped him;
-
And followed in
letter and spirit that Visible Light:
the lightener of the Path to Destination, Guarantor of the
Continuity of Life:
Grand Qur'aan.
Its
characteristic feature is that it was
compactly descended -flash descent
along with him: Muhammad
[Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam-his
corporeal appearance-sending in the lowly world].
-
Aforementioned are
the people who endeavor for perpetual success-fruitfulness. [7:157]
