Ibn Faris [died
1005] stated:
(مقاييس اللغة)
الدال والنون والحرف المعتل أصلٌ واحد
يُقاس بعضُه على بعض، وهو المقارَبَة
It signifies to compare - contrast, measure - gauge
something with something, and it is to approach and draw nearer; in
mathematics asymptote: a line that draws increasingly nearer to a curve
without ever meeting it.
Lane's Lexicon: To become near, or draw near, or
approach; meaning weak; contemptible;
Of, or relating to, the present world, or
state of existence; worldly.
Grand Qur’ān has rendered its meanings explicit by
contrast:

[Reverting from
parenthetic] These are the
people who have intentionally preferred the Life of this
World over the Life of the Hereafter.

Therefore, the
punishment will not be lightened-reprieved for them.

Nor they will ever
get help from anyone who could help. [2:86]
Elative
