Ibn Faris-ابن فارس [died-1005] stated:

دَلَّ) الدَّالُ وَاللَّامُ أَصْلَانِ: أَحَدُهُمَا إِبَانَةُ الشَّيْءِ بِأَمَارَةٍ تَتَعَلَّمُهَا، وَالْآخَرُ اضْطِرَابٌ فِي الشَّيْءِ

That it signifies demonstration and presentation of a thing by sign enabling perception; and secondly it means excitement, agitation, confusion, uneasiness in something.
