Ibn Faris [died-1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

القاف والراء والحرف المعتل أصلٌ صحيحٌ يدلُّ على جمعٍ واجتماعٍ.

That it leads to the perception of gathering and compilation.

This signification is mentioned in classical lexicon لسان العرب in these words:

وقَرَأْتُ الشيءَ قُرْآناً: جَمَعْتُه وضَمَمْتُ بعضَه إِلى بعض

The basic perception infolded in the Root is of an activity involving the process of gathering a thing at one place-point; add one thing to another. It thus changes the scattered - separated - bifurcated - spread position of a thing into a whole; a unity.

The renowned lexicons say that "قرات الناقة" means that the she-camel became pregnant. What is pregnancy? Why she became pregnant? What activity made her pregnant? The act of gathering [ ق ر ء] of the sperm and ova made her pregnant.

Lane's Lexicon indicates its primary signification as under:

" قَرَأَ الشَّىْءَ  , [aor. قَرَاَ ,] inf. n. قُرْآنٌ, He collected together the thing; put it, or drew it, together;  part to part, or portion to portion. [This seems to be generally regarded as the primary signification.]".

"قرء" plural  is for multiple discharges of menstruation of a woman. What is menstruation and what physical relationship does it have with the basic perception of Rootق ر أ ? Menstruation is breaking of the spread lining [endometrium] of the uterus which gets colleted together as a whole and is discharged.. Arabic Roots, in their perception in fact, enfold all the physical realities relating both to matter and life.

The basic perception of the Root is compilation, the process of gathering. When we carry out this process with regard to letters-alphabet-syllables of a language/written material it produces and yields the product , a book; written reading material collected together and placed in one receptacle; it is the opposite of a shredded/scattered state.

  • Know the facts of the days of revelation of Qur'aan: When Our Aaya'at: Unitary Verbal Passages of  miscellany of Qur'aan characteristically explicitly explicative were relayed to them word by word:

  • Those of them, who were not believing about their presentation before Our Majesty for accountability, demanded saying:

  • "You [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] come to us with some readable material-book which should be other than this Qur'aan; or you change-substitute contents of this Qur'aan". [10:15]

[Muslims of today may ponder for a while and count how many books/written material other than the [] Grand Qur'aan is saved in their chests and revered and equated with it. The request of the pagans was nothing more than this.]

The Root ق ر أ is employed for the act of reading the written material [] since reading is in fact joining and collecting the letters and signs of the language and simultaneously [though there is always a time lag trillionth or billionth of a second] pronouncing it with sound or without sound. Moreover, even when we read/recite to someone without there being the written matter in front, we in fact are reading the written matter earlier stored/written in the memory. However, though that writing is not ours but written by someone else exactly in the manner that the words written by us on the monitor screen with the help of key board are written in the hard disk by someone else.

However when we say to/command someone we actually ask him to read from the written paper/book placed/before him; "You read your book/written record" [Refer 17:14]

  • Thereby, you people read that much text of the Qur'aan which is felt convenient [ for retaining your concentration/focus-the basic manner of reading a book] [Refer 73:20]

The Book which was sent to Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam has been given the specific name , "The Grand Written Book/The Grand Qur'aan". After this the major classification of books in the world is:

1. and,

2. All other books are  "the written books other than the Grand Qur'aan".
