Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الحاء والجيم والباء أصل واحد، وهو المنع. يقال حجبته عن كذا، أي منَعتُه.

It signifies preventing and hindering and is used to describe a state when one is separated from another by something coming in between, a barrier.

Lane's Lexicon: He, or it, prevented, hindered, debarred, or precluded, him, or it:

  • Know it; some visibility obscuring space-veil is in between both of them: companions of Paradise and Hell-Prison.

  • And many men are seated upon the platforms of recognition and exaltation. They recognize all others by their identifications;

  • And they called up the residents of the Paradise: "Peace and tranquility has overarched upon you."

  • These men on the drive ways have not yet entered her: Paradise [being of later generation] while they are hopefully desiring to enter. [7:46]

  • And they said "Our hearts are in veil from that towards which you invite us

  • A heavy load is deposited within our ears;

  • And between us and between you is a barrier

  • Therefore, you act as you like, indeed we are acting the way we like." [41:05]

  • Know it, when You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] read out the Qur'aan, We did render an invisible partition between you and between them who believe not in the Hereafter; [17:45]

  • And you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] mention in the Book the narrative about Maryam [Siddiqa]; when she purposely retired herself away from her household- family members into the easterly location in house; [19:16]

  • Whereat she occupied a place obtaining partitioned seclusion apart from them.

  • Then We sent Our Messenger- Gibraa'iel [alai'his'slaam] towards her, thereat he assumed appearance of a very decent human being for meeting her. [19:17]
