Basic perception infolded in the Root is that of paucity of anything good and appreciable; and to deny, or not to acknowledge a thing in absolute sense. It relates to denial of such a thing about which the person from within knows it to be otherwise-knows it to be true, as is highlighted in 27:14. Thus denial is not for reason of some confusion or suspicion about the stated thing; but is deliberate and conscious public denial after refusing it, in consideration of it being damaging for their personal motives/pride/arrogance/favourable status quo.

Learned Ibne Faris [died 1005] had given its perception in these words, as is reflected above:

يدلُّ على قِلّة الخير

ومن هذا الباب الجُحود، وهو ضدّ الإقرار، ولا يكون إلاّ مع علم الجاحد به أنّه صحيح

  • O you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] We certainly know that indeed it grieves you what they people keep saying in public;

  • Why you feel grief; it should not cause you grief [10:65;36:76] for reason that they certainly do not publicly contradict and accuse you of falsity; but these unjust people, the distorters of fact  purposely deny publicly the Aa'ya'at: Verbal Passages of the Book of Allah the Exalted. [6:33]

  • Thereupon, when Our Aa'ya'at: unprecedented displays came to them that were luminous:

  • [but despite that] They remarked, "It is evident visual illusion". [27:13]

  • And wrangled instead of acknowledging the unprecedented happenings; unfairly and with self pride/haughtiness, while their inner-selves had become absolutely convinced about them.

  • Be cautioned, visualize and reflect as to what was the upshot of the creators of imbalances, distortions, divergencies in the society? [27:14]
