Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

خَوَضَ)
الْخَاءُ وَالْوَاوُ وَالضَّادُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى تَوَسُّطِ
شَيْءٍ وَدُخُولٍ. يُقَالُ خُضْتُ الْمَاءَ وَغَيْرَهُ.
وَتَخَاوَضُوا
فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَالْأَمْرِ، أَيْ تَفَاوَضُوا وَتَدَاخَلَ كَلَامُهُمْ
That it leads to the perception of
interposition and entering a thing, and it means wading through the
water, and engage in conversation.
Lane's Lexicon:
He waded, or forded, through the water;]
he passed through the water walking or riding: or he
entered into the water;

engaging in vain and conjectural discussions.
