Ibn Faris [died-1005] stated:
(مقاييس اللغة)
خَيَلَ) الْخَاءُ وَالْيَاءُ
وَاللَّامُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى حَرَكَةٍ فِي تَلَوُّنٍ. فَمِنْ
ذَلِكَ
الْخَيَالُ، وَهُوَ الشَّخْصُ. وَأَصْلُهُ مَا
يَتَخَيَّلُهُ الْإِنْسَانُ فِي مَنَامِهِ ؛
That it signifies movement in colorful -
capricious manner, and from it is fantasy, vision which is rising high,
and its origin is what a man supposes, imagines in dream.
Lane's Lexicon:
He thought, or opined, the thing: and
sometimes he knew the thing: but it seems to have originally
signified

الشىءَ, i. e. he surmised, or
fancied, the thing:

تَخْيِيلٌ
تخييل signifies The imaging a thing in the mind, or
fancying it; the forming an image, or a fancied image, thereof
in the mind:

The love
of sensual excitements felt for some of the women has become
alluring for people;

And having sons has
become a longing
for people.

So has become the
desire to have a state of hoarded abundance of Gold and
Silver;

And the marked-pedigree horses [top of the line
products], and abundance of
herbivore-mammals, and for plenty of harvesting lands.
-
This is the
wealth-sustenance-provision of the transitory worldly life.
-
Mind it that Allah
the Exalted grants the most appropriate return and abode by His
Grace. [3:14]
-
Take note;
you are directed to prepare
for them, whatever is possible in your reach, reflective of combat
force and strength and a force of
cavalry-mobile troops;
-
You will deter -
astonish and frighten the
enemy of Allah the Exalted and your enemy with this
preparedness: deterrence;
-
And apart from them, for other potential
enemy whom you people do
not presently recognize; Allah the
Exalted knows them.
-
And whatever should you spend in
the cause of Allah the Exalted it will fully be paid back to you;
-
And you people will not be met with slightest
injustice. [8:60]
-
And He the Exalted created
horses, and mules and donkeys,
so that you people might use them for ride-carriage. And these
mammals have become object of alluring desire.
-
Know it,
He the Exalted creates-will create that which you people know not. [16:08]
-
He said, "No,
you people throw - demonstrate
to public [whatever you
demonstrate]"
-
Thereby when
they demonstrated, their ropes and sticks seemed
to him in
imagination, by their illusory trick
[thrown in such
manner/equation and timing]
as if a snake was moving.
