Root: ق ص ص

Words from this Root in the Grand Qur'aan:

a) Total occurrences: 30

b) No of constructions: 22

The basic perception infolded in the Root, in the words of Ibne Faris [died 1005] is that of following and tracking something, literally step by step. Lane's Lexicon portrayed this perception in these words; "to follow after one's track or footprints in pursuit; endeavour to trace or track someone". The Grand Qur'aan has depicted the perception and meanings infolded in the Root in the narration of an episode:

  • [ignoring his amazement] He said, "That is the point which We were seeking to find".

  • Thereby they carefully returned upon the track. footprints of both to that point, in the manner of tracing step by step. [18:64]

The Grand Qur'aan for itself is the best Lexicon. It exposes the perception and meanings of its words in a picturesque manner. : It is the Cognate Adverb [المفعول المطلق] in the sentence. It is a verbal noun in accusative case. The Cognate Adverb is used with a meaning very similar to the mentioned action to indicate the manner in which the action takes place. Verbal noun: depicts and highlights the meanings of this action- Prefixed Particle signifying cause and effect relationship + Verb: Perfect; Third person; dual; masculine; active; [Form VIII]; [الف ] Subject Pronoun, in nominative state: مصدر-اِرْتَدَادٌ Verbal noun. The basic meanings of it are to return to the point of origin. The Verbs of Form-VIII add connotation of reflexive causative and exertion of more effort on the part of its subject. Keeping in view the nature of action in the verb, "carefully" denotes the exertion of more effort. It therefore means, "Thereby they both made themselves carefully return: upon their tracks, marks left on the surface of something, footprints".

The Grand Qur'aan gives the best "breaking news" of established facts and happened episodes-events. Moreover, it provides the updates about that news which it broke.

  • It is a fact that the episode about Easa [alai'his'slaam] mentioned hereinbefore is certainly its image by image verbal replica, absolutely accurate and truthful.

A compilation of the sequence of happenings in the past is episode , a part of history but distinct and of specific significance from the greater whole. Each part/segment of this compilation is unitary news, an activity, each segment is distinct static image like a mark/footprint. Each movement has, and leaves behind consecutive, one after the other images-traces. The movement/activity may apparently vanish but if we had seen or recorded the activity which is nothing but saving in memory or tape-disk the images, we can see that movement again either by recalling from memory or rewinding the tape and playing it bac. Therefore: denotes narrating the episode in the exact manner of its actual happening, displaying the pictures of it clip by clip, image by image: the footage in present day parlance so that the activity and actual happening could be visualized by the listener and reader.

  • These were the civilizations, We are verbally replicating to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] some of their episodes. [Refer 7:101]

  • This episode which We are replicating verbally to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam], in sequence/footage of actual happenings, is a part of the news of the Cities.

  • Some Standing/existing and mown/diminished might be traced partly of them. [11:100]

  • We replicate verbally to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] step by step-event by event the news about them, infallibly truthful facts. [Refer 18:13]

  • Likewise, Our Majesty is narrating to you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] the episodes; in event by event manner, some out of the miscellany of news that have passed.  [Refer 20:99]

We are persistently observing the fact that the words made from a Root, notwithstanding their different moulds-frames-structures of formation/construction, and the context and relational connotations, they do contain and retain the basic perception and signification infolded in their respective Root. The beauty and distinction and sublimity of Arabic Roots is that they contain all physical/scientific realities relating both to matter and life relating to their area of signification.

The basic perception of the Root is to pursue the traces-marks-steps from one point to another point, from beginning to end or backwards from end point to point of origin. Movement is inherent therein. Therefore, the Verbal Noun/noun of action verbally mirrors an activity, news about the happening. This in fact is the replay for visualization of  the past serving this objective:

  • Certainly, a terrorizing and awakening lesson; embedded in the replicated verbal narration of the episodes/incidents of those people, is mirrored for men of understanding who reflect objectively to arrive at the purpose/objective of it. [Refer 12:111]

The perception and signification infolded in this Root clarifies a very important aspect about the Day of Judgment, the System of Justice and the role of the Messengers of Allah, the Exalted, to act as the Witness.

  • Know it; By appointing Kaa'aba as Qib'la'tae: Focal Point for all, We have declared [taken out for humanity 3:110] you people a justly balanced, moderate, good and exalted community;

  • The purpose is that you might attain the position of witnesses over the people of society; and the Messenger [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam, embodiment of mercy] be the witness over you people. [Refer 2:143]

This is reiterated where sequence is converted:

  • So that the Messenger [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam, embodiment of mercy] be the witness over you people and you become the witnesses over contemporary people of society, [Refer 22:78]

This fact is disclosed to the Messenger [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] and to us all, the humanity:

  • O you the Elevated and Chosen One [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam],

  • it is a certain fact that We have sent you as Messenger to act as a Witness and Guarantor/Giver of glad tidings and Warner/Revivalist/Admonisher [for all times to come]; [33:45]

  • It is a certain fact that We have sent you [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] as to act as a Witness and Guarantor/Giver of glad tidings and Warner/Revivalist/Admonisher [for all times to come], [48:08]

  • Certainly, We have sent to you people the Messenger, who is a witness upon you; [Refer 73:15]

Our general perception and the laws about admissibility of evidence in the Courts is that a person who is physically present on the scene and has watched/observed,  he is the primary/eye witness. Reliance on his witness is on the presumption that the scene is recorded in his memory, and he can retrieve it and verbally replicate the scene. This signifies that the person has the authentic or reliable knowledge of the happening. In modern days, the footage recorded in a CCTV camera serves and acts as Observer and Witness, because it can be rewound and played back to watch the activity on the scene of occurrence, which is more reliable than the human eye.

The above understanding with reference to our every day life observation saves us from delving in the delicacies of words: and . They relate both to being present, as well being aware and having full knowledge of the incident, occurrence, scene, conduct. The point is made vivid in the Grand Qur'aan:

  • Know it, the day when Allah the Exalted will assemble the Messengers; thereat, He will enquire from them: "What response did you have?"

  • They replied: "Knowledge of all sorts is not exhibited-within the reach for us;

  • Indeed You the Exalted are the absolutely knowledgeable of all that exists which is not within the reach/focus of others" [5:109]

The question was not restricted, it was wide open covering response to the Message delivered by them in time and space upon which they were not corporeally witness. Messengers do not utter a single word, unless they possess the complete and absolute knowledge about that thing.

  • Thereby subjecting them to accountability on Day of Judgment, Our Majesty will certainly  question those people towards whom the Messenger were sent;

  • And We will certainly enquire from the Messengers about the response they received. [7:06]

  • Thereat, in response to their answer, Our Majesty will narrate the history to the Messengers in detail based on knowledge;

  • Mind it, We were not absent from the scene like the Messengers after their natural death. [7:07]
