That its basic meaning is that of despair, desperation, despondence; disappointed.

Lane's Lexicons: He despaired, or gave up hope,  مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللّٰهِ of the mercy of God. - He became broken [in spirit], and mournful. - He was, or became, silent,  returning no reply, or answer, by reason of grief,  or of despair.  He was, or became, confounded or perplexed, and unable to see his right course.

 

• Consequently when they had forgotten that with which they were reminded; We opened doors of affluence upon them;
