Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

اللام والميم والسين أصلٌ واحدٌ يدلُّ على تطلُّبِ شيء ومَسيسِه أيضاً

That it leads to the perception of want, desire, to require and perceiving by touching.

 لَمْسٌ and مَسٌّ both signify the perceiving by means of the exterior of the external skin: (Er-Rághib, TA:) or they are nearly alike: (TA:) [generally, like the English words feeling and touching, respectively:] or the former is, originally, [the feeling] with the hand for the purpose of knowing the feel (مَسّ) of a thing:

  • Or you did intercourse with respective wives: 4:43; 5:6

  • Know it that meeting their demand-4:153; Had We sent piecemeal upon you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] a book, visibly dropping written in black and white upon leaf of paper;

  • Whereby they touched and felt it with their hands:
