Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

 الْمِيمُ وَالشِّينُ وَالْجِيمُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ، وَهُوَ الْخَلْطُ.

That it signifies mixture, blending, commixture, cluster.

لسان العرب — ابن منظور

المشَجُ والمَشِيجُ: كُلُّ لَوْنينِ اخْتلَطا، وَقِيلَ: هُوَ مَا اخْتَلَطَ مِنْ حُمْرَةٍ وَبَيَاضٍ،

That it signifies mixing, mingling of all colours; and some say it is clustering, mixing of shades of red and white.
