Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الراء والهاء والقاف أصلان متقاربان: فأحدهما غِشيان الشّيءِ الشيءَ، والآخر العَجلة والتأخير.فأمَّا الأوّل فقولُهم: رَهِقَه الأمرُ: غَشِيَه

That it has two convergent signification; firstly fainting, covering, veiling a thing by something; and secondly hurry and delaying.

  • And it is a fact that there have been men amongst Human species who have been seeking [in their thought and perception] refuge with the men from Jinn species whereat they increased them absorbed and veiled in stupidity. [72:06]


  • And indeed the moment we have listened the Guide - Guidance (Grand Qur’ān), we have accepted/believed in it.

  • And as regards those who earned evil deeds,  their punishment will be proportionate to the evil done.

  • And humiliation will overwhelm them —

  • —[humiliation will overwhelm them] As if their faces had been veiled by patches of night, rendering them darkened black.

  • They are the people who will be the resident inmates of the scorching Hell-Prison.

  • They will abide therein permanently. [10:27]


  • With their visions dazed/downcast and humiliation overwhelmed them —
