The basic perception infolded in the Root is that of uttering in low voice while making a sign with eyes, head or lips. It thus conveys the meaning of finding faults in someone, upbraiding, reproaching, slandering or blaming, and talking evil against someone on his face or on his back-backbiting.

Lane Lexicon: He made a sign to him with the eye, or the like, (S, A, * Msb, K,) as the head, and the lip, with low speech. (TA.) This is the original signification. one who speaks evil of others, or does so in their absence, though it may be with truth; (يَغْتَابُهُمْ; and this may mean [who detracts by making signswith the side of the mouth, or with the eye, or with the head; TA;) and defames them


  • And there is greedy person amongst them (Muna'fi'qeen: Imposter believers) who slanders against you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] with regard to treasury gifts/collections.

  • Thereby, if such people were bestowed out of treasury collections they would have felt satisfied and happy; and if they were not bestowed out of it, thereat they are outraged [and start slandering]. [9:58]

  • Those who criticize and slander against the willing donors amongst the believers in giving away gifts of generosity and against those who do not find resources except their physical effort/exertion

  • Thereby, some of them go a step further mocking and ridiculing. Allah the Exalted has discarded as condemned such of them.

  • Be mindful, a severe punishment is prepared-in wait for them. [9:79]

  • اور جان لوایک دردناک عذاب اُن کیلئے تیار ؍ منتظر ہے


  • O those people/you, who consciously proclaim to have accepted/become believers, listen;

  • No group of people should indulge in mocking/ridiculing another people, it is possible that they may be better than them

  • And nor group of women should indulge mocking/ridiculing other women, it is possible that they may be better than them

  • And you people should not slander against each other and nor make yourselves habitual in calling others with nicknames of negative import

  • The act of calling by the name having characteristic of defiant import, after the Belief, is wretched.

Root: ف س ق

  • And whoever has not remorsefully left this habit and returned

  • Thereby, such people are truly the evil-doers-distorters-creators of imbalances-disorders-over stepping. [49:11]

  • تو یہ ہیں وہ لوگ جو حقیقت کو باطل میں بدلنے والے ہیں۔


  • Woe and regret is for every slanderer and jestingly winker [104:01]
