Lane Lexicon: he became emaciated (lit. dissolvedby grief, or by excessive love: (S:) or he became at the point of death: (Msb:) and he suffered protracted disquietude of mind, and disease; He excited, incited, urged, or instigated, him, (Zj, S, ISd, K,) and roused him to ardour, (S,) عَلَى القِتَالِ to fight, (Zj, S,) or عَلَى الشَّىْءِ to do the thing,

The basic perception infolded in the Root is that of a dissolved or emaciated state by disease or excessive grief, or by excessive love leading one to the point of death or endangering life. Hence, it is employed to urge, excite, incite, instigate; and rouse ardour to avert the threat to life. A dissolved and emaciated state puts the energy and life retaining body heat to a lower level. Exciting and inciting creates an urge for recovery and energizes the body heat and energy.

When war is imposed upon believers by the disbelievers, it not only puts their life at stake but threatens even their real life in the hereafter since in case of subjugation their belief and code of conduct will also be at jeopardy. The Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] is advised:

  • [reverting to matter in 4:77] Thereby, you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] fight the war for the cause of Allah the Exalted. You are not burdened and made responsible for anyone except your self;

  • However, urge upon the believers to participate in the imposed war.

  • There is hope for you that Allah the Exalted will restrain the combat power of those who have refused to accept.

  • People should know it; Allah the Exalted is the Mightiest with regard to causing calamitous events; and super powerful in restraining people. [4:84]

  • O you the Elevated and Chosen Allegiant [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam], urge upon the believers to participate in the imposed war [for safety of true life].

  • [for paucity of man power] If there be twenty coolly perseverant men of determination amongst you they should overpower and dominate upon two hundred

  • And if there were a hundred such men amongst you they should overpower and dominate upon one thousand men from those who have refused to accept belief because they are a people who do not understand; that Allah helps the believers while they purely rely on manpower and material. [8:65]

  • They said, "By Allah! you will persist remembering and recalling Yu'suf until you might become fatally weak or you may die." [12:85]
