Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الزاء والياء واللام ليس أصلاً، لكنّ الياء فيه مبدلةٌ من واو، وقد مضى ذِكره، وذُكِرَتْ هنالك كلماتُ اللَّفظِ. فالتَّزايل: التباين. يقال زَيَّلْتُ بينه، أي فرّقْت،

That it signifies difference, contrast, inequality, creating a difference, rift in between something, meaning separating.

Lane Lexicon:  inf. n. زَيْلٌ, (S,) [first pers. of زَالَهُ,] signifies also I put it, or set it, apart, away, or aside; removed it; or separated it; (S, K, TA;) namely, a thing, (S, TA,) from another thing: (TA:) and ↓ ازالهُ also signifies he separated it

Classical Lexicons

separation, sorting out, distinguishing between, disappearance. Two different verbs are classified under this Root: زَالَ-يَزَالُ with preceding negative particle لا-ما means "still" or continuing to be. And زَالَ-يَزِلُ which means "to sort out".


  • They (people) ask you (the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam]) about instructions regarding engaging in war during the sacred month.

  • You tell them; "The waging of war during the sacred month is of course something serious and a big decision.

  • But take note that the act of hindering people from the Path of Allah the Exalted and persistent denial of it and restraining people from the sacred Mosque, and causing expulsion of its residents is a far greater matter in the sight of Allah the Exalted".

  • And be conscious that spreading disturbance-anarchy-liquefying-disintegration in the society is far more a serious-greater a crime than the individual murder of a person.

  • And be mindful that they (disavowers) will not cease-hesitate in waging war upon you in order that they might make you renegades away from your System of Belief and Conduct: Islam, provided they have amassed for themselves the capability for it.

  • And he amongst you who at his own accord reneged-renounced the System of Belief and Conduct: Islam and then died while he was still a disavower —

  • Resultantly, they are the people whose acts have become voided, weightless froth, destructive in the worldly life and the Hereafter —

  • And they are the people who will be the resident inmates of the scorching Hell-Prison —

  • They will abide therein permanently/indefinitely. [2:217]


  • Thereby, subsequent to their deliberate breach of the solemn pledge-covenant of them:

  • Our Majesty discarded them as condemned and cursed —

  • And Our Majesty declared their hearts as hardened-dense, stuck to one place, immovable than stones, remorseless.

  • They are in habit of distorting the definite expression out of their context giving it a different angle-dimension-perspective.

  • وہ ایک مخصوص بات کو اس کے سیاق و سباق،ان مقامات کے حوالے سے جہاں اس کا (قرء ان مجید میں)ذکر ہوا ہے،دوسری/الگ جانب پلٹاتے رہتے ہیں۔

  • And they have forgotten the significant and specific part of covenant about which they were reminded [by Easa alai'his'slaam].

  • Be aware; you will never cease to receive information about treachery on their part barring a few of them [who are not stiffened hearted/knowledgeable who become believers].

Root: خ و ن

  • Therefore, divert yourself from them ignoring what they do and leave them graciously after telling the fact.

  • It is a fact that Allah the Exalted appreciates-loves-acknowledges those who conduct moderately, gracefully and generously [5:13]


  • Their building, the one they designed, will continue to be irking disquiet of duality sustained in their (Muna'fi'qeen) hearts. This irk will continue except that their hearts might diligently self disassociate/distance.

  • Remain cognizant; Allah the Exalted is the Fountain and Setter of knowledge-science of visible and invisible domains, realities, considerations; and the Infinitely Just Supreme Administrator of the created realm. [9:110]


  • Know the happenings of the Day of resurrection; Our Majesty will collect them, all together —

  • Afterwards Our Majesty will say for those who ascribed partners, stay where you are, you and your partners.

  • Then Our Majesty made a rift between them —

  • And their partners said to them: "you were not worshipping and allegiant to us exclusively. [10:28]


  • Know it, had your Sustainer Lord so intended, He the Exalted would have rendered the people a singular homogeneous entity/fraternity [that was not the intent of creation].

  • And they will cease not purposely differing and contradicting — [11:118]


  • Know it, if Qur’ān was such reading by which the mountains could have been moved or by it the Land could have cloven asunder or with it the dead could have conversed; they would still not have believed.

  • The fact is that the matter-affair-commanding is exclusively the domain for Allah the Exalted, all together.

  • Is it then for reason that those who have heartily believed have not yet lost hope [of their becoming believer-read with 2:75;10:99;12:103;16:37] that if Allah the Exalted had so willed certainly He would have guided the humanity, all collectively.

  • And some striking knocks of warning will not cease to those who have refused to believe in Qur’ān because of what they have artfully conjectured.

  • Or that disaster may liquefy/settle nearby their locality until the time of arrival of Allah's promise.

  • The fact remains that Allah the Exalted never violates the promise. [13:31]

  • یہ حقیقت ہے ،اللہ تعالیٰ دئیے ہوئے وعدے کی خلاف ورزی نہیں فرماتے۔


  • Thereupon their such sobbing did not cease until Our Majesty rendered them mown, quenched silent ashes. [21:15]

  • Know it, they who have refused to accept will not cease to be in dilemmatic disconcert about it (Qur’ān) —

  • Until the Appointed Moment comes to them, all of a sudden —

  • Or infliction of a day of absolute disaster comes to them. [22:55]


  • And it is a certain fact that in the past Yusuf [alai'his'slaam] had come to you people with evident signs/Aa'ya'at—

  • Whereupon you people ceased not to remain in skepticism about that which he had come with—

  • Until when he died natural death you people had said, "Allah will never send after him any more as Messenger."

  • This is how Allah exposes/lets remain in neglectfulness/straying the one who keeps himself suffering disquiet of double mindedness and is committer of excesses/extremities to others—[40:34]


  • They are the people who had refused to accept/believe and they had stopped/diverted you people from the Sacred Mosque —

  • And prevented the sacrificial mammals that they may reach their destined point of sacrifice.

  • And had there been not believing men and believing women whom you had not yet known that you may have treaded them also —

  • Whereupon a blame from them would have got attached with you without being aware of it —

  • This was for that Allah the Exalted may enter whomever He wills under the Umbrella of His Mercy —

  • If those believing men and believing women had made themselves segregated apart, certainly Our Majesty would have punished with severe infliction those of them who had refused to believe  — [48:25]
