(Measures of Language)
The letters hamza, lām, and hāʾ have a single root, which is worship. So "Ilāh" (the deity) is Allah, Exalted is He, and He is named such because He is worshipped.
And it is said: "A man taʾallaha" when he worships. Ruʾbah said:
"For Allah's sake, how excellent are the singers who prolong their song! They glorified and sought mercy from my worship (taʾalluhī)."
And Al-ilāhah: the sun, named so because a people used to worship it. The poet said: [The poet's line is not provided here].
As for their saying regarding bewilderment: "Aliha yaʾlahu (he was bewildered/confused)," it is not from this category, because its hamza is originally a wāw. It has been mentioned in its own place.

(Lisān al-ʿArab)
Al-Ilāh (The Deity): Al-Ilāh is Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And everything taken as an object of worship besides Him is an ilāh (deity) in the view of its worshipper. Its plural is ālihah (deities/gods).
Ālihah (Idols): Al-Ālihah are idols, named such because of their belief that worship is due to them. Their names follow their beliefs, not the actual reality of the thing itself.
Al-Ulhāniyyah (Divinity): And "it is clearly divine (bayyin al-ilāhati wal-ulhāniyyah)." In the Ḥadīth of Wuḥayb ibn al-Ward: "When a servant falls into the divinity (ulhāniyyah) of the Lord, the protective guardianship (muhayminiyyah) of the truthful, and the monastic devotion (rahbāniyyah) of the righteous, he finds no one who takes hold of his heart"—meaning he finds no one and loves none except Allah, Glorified is He. Ibn al-Athīr said: It is derived from ilāh, and its measure is fuʿlāniyyah with a ḍammah. You say: "An ilāh clearly manifesting divinity (ilāhiyyah) and divine nature (ulhāniyyah)." Its origin is from aliha yaʾlahu meaning "he was bewildered/perplexed." He means: When a servant falls into the majesty of Allah, His grandeur, and other attributes of lordship and directs his mind to them, he comes to loathe people such that his heart inclines to no one.
Al-Azharī's Narration: Al-Azharī said: Al-Layth said: It reached us that the Greatest Name of Allah is "Allāh—there is no deity except Him alone." He said: And the Arabs say: "Lillāhi mā faʿalta dhāka (By Allah, you did not do that)," meaning "Wallāhi mā faʿalta (By Allah, you did not do it)."
Al-Khalīl's View: Al-Khalīl said: "Allāh"—the alif is not dropped from the Name. It is simply Allāh, Exalted is His remembrance, complete. He said: It is not from the names from which deriving a verb is permissible, unlike what is permissible with Al-Raḥmān and Al-Raḥīm.
Abū al-Haytham on the Derivation: Al-Mundhirī
reported from Abū al-Haytham that he was asked about the linguistic derivation
of the name of Allah, Exalted is He. He said: Its rightful form is Ilāhun (a
deity). The alif and lām (definite article) were inserted for
definiteness, so it became Al-Ilāhu. Then the Arabs dropped the hamzah because
they found it heavy. When they omitted the hamzah, they transferred
its kasrah vowel to the lām of definition (which is always
originally vowelless), and the hamzah was completely lost, so they
said Alilāhun. They then voweled the lām of definition—which
is never voweled—and two vowelled lāms came together, so they
assimilated the first into the second, saying "Allāhu," as Allah,
Mighty and Majestic, said: "Lakinnā huwa Allāhu rabbī" (But He is Allāh,
my Lord), meaning "lakin anā" (but I). Then, when the Arabs heard "Allāhumma"
(O Allah) in common speech, they imagined that if the alif and lām were
dropped from Allāh, the remainder would be "Lāh," so they said
"Lāhumma." He recited:
"Lāhumma anta tajburu al-kasīrā, / anta wahabta jillatan Jurjūrā" (O
Allah, You mend the broken one, / You have granted a great gift, O Jurjūr).
And they say: "Lāhi abūka (By your father!)," meaning "Allāhi abūka (By
Allah, your father)." The lām here is for astonishment. He recited by
Dhū al-Iṣbaʿ:
"Lāhi ibnu ʿammī mā yakhāfu al-ḥādithāti min al-ʿawāqib" (By my cousin,
he does not fear the consequences of events).
Other Dialectal Variations: Abū al-Haytham
said: "The Arabs have also said 'bismi Allāh' without lengthening the lām and
dropping the lengthening of 'Lāh.'" He recited:
"Aqbala saylun jāʾa min amri Allāhi, / yaḥrid ḥarda al-jannati al-mughillah"
(A flood came by the command of Allah, / roaring like the roar of the closing
garden).
And he recited:
"Lahinnaki min ʿabsīyyatin lā wasīmatun, / ʿalā hanawātin kādhibin man
yaqūluhā" (It is for you, O beautiful ʿAbsī woman, / upon a liar's
falsehoods, whoever says them).
It is originally "Lillāhi innaki (For Allah, indeed you...)," so he
dropped the alif and lām and said "Lāhi innaki," then
omitted the hamzah of "innaki" and said "Lahinnaki."
And another said:
"Abāʾinatun Suʿdā, naʿam wa-tumāḍiru, / lahinnā lumaqḍiyyun ʿalaynā al-tahājuru"
(Are you leaving, O Suʿdā? Yes and Tumāḍir? / For us, separation is decreed upon
us).
Meaning "Lāhi innā (By Allah, we...)," so he dropped the lengthening of
"Lāhi" and omitted the hamzah of "innā," like his
saying "Lāhi ibnu ʿammika..."
Al-Farrāʾ's Explanation: Al-Farrāʾ said regarding the poet's saying "lahinnaki": He meant "li-innaki," substituting the hamzah with a hāʾ, like "harāqa al-māʾa" (he poured the water) for "arāqa," and he inserted the lām into "in" for an oath, which is why he responded to it with the lām in "lā wasīmatun."
Abū Zayd's Narration: Abū Zayd said: "Al-Kisāʾī told me: 'I composed a book on the meanings of the Quran. I asked him: Have you heard "Al-ḥamdu Lāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīn"?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Listen to it.'"
Al-Azharī's Ruling: Al-Azharī said: "In the Quran, only 'Al-ḥamdu lillāhi' with the lengthened lām is permissible. What Abū Zayd narrated is read by Bedouins and those who do not know the tradition of the Quran."
Abū al-Haytham on Meaning: Abū al-Haytham said: "So 'Allāh' originates from 'Ilāh.' Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Allāh has not taken any son, nor is there any ilāh (deity) with Him, for then each ilāh would have taken what it created.'" He said: "One is not an ilāh unless he is worshipped and unless he is for his worshipper a creator, sustainer, manager, and one has power over him. Whoever is not like that is not an ilāh, even if worshipped unjustly; rather, he is a created being and one served." He said: "The origin of ilāh is wilāh; the wāw was changed to a hamzah, as they said for al-wishāḥ (girdle) ishāḥ, and for al-wijāḥ (curtain) ijāḥ. The meaning of wilāh is that creation turns to Him (yawlahūna ilayhi) in their needs, humble themselves to Him in what befalls them, and flee to Him in all that afflicts them—just as every child turns in need (yawlahu) to his mother."
Sun as Ilāhah: The Arabs named the sun "ilāhah" when they worshipped it.
Dialectal Names for Sun: Al-ulahah:
the hot sun—reported from Thaʿlab. And al-alīhah, al-alāhah, al-ilāhah,
and ulāhah all mean the sun, a name for it. The ḍammah at its
beginning is from Ibn al-Aʿrābī. Mayyah bint Umm ʿUtbah (or ʿUtaybah) ibn
al-Ḥārith—as Ibn Barī said—said:
"Tawwaraḥnā min al-laʿbāʾi ʿaṣran, fa-aʿjalnā al-ilāhata an taʾūbā, / ʿalā
mithli ibni Mayyata, fanʿayāhu, tashuqqu nawāʿimu al-bashari al-juyūbā" (We
took our ease from al-Laʿbāʾ in the afternoon, then the sun hurried us to
return, / like the son of Mayyah, so we mourned him, tender skins rending
collars).
Ibn Barī said: "It is also said to be by the daughter of ʿAbd al-Ḥārith al-Yarbūʿī, and it is said to be the elegy of ʿUtaybah ibn al-Ḥārith." He said: "Abū ʿUbaydah said it is by Umm al-Banīn bint ʿUtaybah ibn al-Ḥārith, mourning him." Ibn Sīdah said: "Ibn al-Aʿrābī recited it as 'ulāhata.'" He said: "Some recited it 'fa-aʿjalnā al-alāhata,' it can be declined or not." Others: The alif-lām can enter it or not. Many things are like this, with the definite article entering the name sometimes and dropping at others. They said: "I met him al-nadrā and fī nadrā," and "faynatun" and "al-faynatu baʿda al-faynati," and "nasrun" and "al-nasru" (name of an idol). It is as if they named it "al-ilāhah" due to their veneration and worship of it, for they used to venerate and worship it. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has informed us of this in His Book when He said: "And among His signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah who created them, if you should be worshipping Him."
Ibn Sīdah on Worship: Ibn Sīdah said: "Al-ilāhah, al-ulūhah, and al-ulūhiyyah mean worship."
Quranic Recitation Variant: And it has been recited: "wa-yadhraka wa-ālihataka" (and leave you and your gods). Ibn ʿAbbās recited: "wa-yadhraka wa-ilāhataka" with a kasrah on the hamzah, meaning "and your worship." This latter recitation, according to Thaʿlab, seems to be the preferred one. He said: "Because Pharaoh was worshipped, not a worshipper. So based on this, he was one with worship (dhū ilāhatin), not one with gods (dhū ālihatin). The first recitation is more common and the reciters are upon it." Ibn Barī said: "What strengthens Ibn ʿAbbās's view in his recitation 'wa-ilāhataka' are Pharaoh's statements: 'I am your most high lord' and 'I know not that you have a god other than me.' For this reason, the Almighty said: 'So Allāh seized him in retribution for the last and the first.' This is what al-Jawharī alluded to in his statement from Ibn ʿAbbās: 'Verily, Pharaoh was worshipped.'"
Idols as Ālihah: It is said: "An ilāh clearly manifesting divinity (ilāhatun) and divine nature (ulhāniyyatan)." The pre-Islamic Arabs used to call their worshipped objects among idols and stones "ālihah," which is the plural of "ilāhah." Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: "wa-yadhraka wa-ālihataka," and they are the idols Pharaoh's people worshipped alongside him.
Etymology of Allāh: "Allāh": Its origin is "Ilāh" on the pattern fiʿāl in the meaning of mafʿūl (passive participle), because He is maʾlūh (i.e., worshipped), like our saying "imām" on the pattern fiʿāl meaning mafʿūl because he is muʾtam (followed). When the alif-lām were introduced to it, the hamzah was dropped for lightness due to its frequency in speech. If they were a substitute for it, they would not have been combined with what they substituted in their saying "al-Ilāh." And the hamzah is cut off in the vocative (yā Allāh) due to its being fixed (luzūm), to magnify this Name.
Al-Jawharī's Discussion: Al-Jawharī said: "I heard Abū ʿAlī the grammarian say that the alif-lām are a substitute for it [the hamzah]." He said: "Evidence for this is their permissibility of cutting off the connecting hamzah that enters upon the lām of definition in oaths and the vocative, as in their saying: 'A-fa-Allāhi la-tafʿalanna' and 'Yā Allāhu ighfir lī.' Do you not see that if it were not a substitute, it would not remain fixed, just as it does not remain in other than this Name?" He said: "It is also not permissible that it is due to the letter being fixed, for that would necessitate cutting the hamzah of 'alladhī' and 'allatī,' which is not allowed. Nor is it permissible that it is because it is an open hamzah even though it is connecting, just as it is not allowed in 'aymu Allāhi' and 'aymun Allāhi,' where it is a connecting hamzah and is open." He said: "It is also not permissible that it is due to frequent usage, for that would necessitate cutting the hamzah in other frequently used words as well. Thus we know it is for a meaning specific to it, not found in others. Nothing is more deserving of that meaning than it being the substitute for the omitted letter, which is the first radical (the fāʾ). Sibawayh permitted that its origin is 'Lāhān' as we will mention."
Ibn Barī's Rebuttal: Ibn Barī said, regarding al-Jawharī's statement "If they were a substitute for it, they would not have been combined with what they substituted in their saying 'al-Ilāh'": "This is a refutation of Abū ʿAlī al-Fārisī, for he used to consider the alif-lām in the name of the Creator, Glorified is He, as a substitute for the hamzah." He said: "What al-Jawharī mentioned from their saying 'al-Ilāh' does not obligate him, because the name 'Allāh' does not permit 'al-Ilāh'; it only occurs with the hamzah omitted. This Name is unique to Him, Glorified is He, no one shares it with Him. If 'al-Ilāh' is said, it applies to Allah, Glorified is He, and to what is worshipped among idols. But if you say 'Allāh,' it applies only to Him, Glorified and Exalted. That is why it is permissible to call upon the name 'Allāh' with the lām of definition and its hamzah cut off, saying 'Yā Allāh,' while it is not permissible in any way to say 'Yā al-Ilāhu'—neither with its hamzah cut off nor connected." He said: "It is said regarding the name of the Creator, Glorified is He, that it is taken from 'aliha yaʾlahu' (to be bewildered/perplexed), because intellects are bewildered (taʾlahu) in His majesty."
Aliha (to be Perplexed): "Aliha alāhan" means he was perplexed. Its origin is "waliha yawlahu walahan."
Alihtu (to Grieve): And "Alihtu
ʿalā fulān" means my grief for him intensified, like "walihtu." It
is said: It is derived from "aliha yaʾlahu ilā kadha" meaning he took
refuge in it, because He, Glorified is He, is the refuge to whom one flees in
every matter. A poet said:
"Alihta ilaynā wal-ḥawādithu jammah" (You turned to us while events
were many).
And another said:
"Alihtu ilayhā wal-rakāʾibu wuqqif" (I turned to her while the mounts
were halted).
Al-Taʾalluh (Devotion): Al-Taʾalluh is asceticism and worship.
Al-Taʾlīh (Making a God): Al-Taʾlīh is
deification. He [Ruʾbah] said:
"Lillāhi darru al-ghānīyāti al-muddahi, / sabbahna wastarjaʿna min taʾalluhī"
(For Allah's sake, how excellent are the singers who prolong their song! They
glorified and sought mercy from my worship).
Vocative Forms: Ibn Sīdah said: "And
they said 'Yā Allāhu' and cut it [the hamzah]." He said: "Sibawayh
narrated this, and it is rare." Thaʿlab narrated that they say "Yā Allāhu,"
connecting it, and these are two dialects (cutting and connecting). The poet's
saying:
"Innī idhā mā ḥadathun alammā / daʿawtu: Yā Allāhumma yā Allāhumā"
(Whenever an event distresses me, I call: O Allāhumma! O Allāhumma!)
Here the doubled mīm is a substitute for the "yā" of address,
combining the substitute and what it substitutes for. Al-Aʿshā lightened it,
saying:
"Ka-ḥalfatin min Abī Rabāḥin yasmaʿuhā / Lāhum al-kibāru" (Like an oath
from Abū Rabāḥ which the great ones hear as 'Lāhum').
The common people recite: "yasmaʿuhā Lāhuhu al-kibāru." He said: "Al-Kisāʾī
recited it: 'yasmaʿuhā Allāhu wallāhu kibāru.'"
Grammar of Allāhumma: Al-Azharī
said: "As for the grammatical analysis of 'Allāhumma,' the ḍammah on
the hāʾ and the fatḥah on the mīm—there is no
difference among grammarians regarding the pronunciation. As for the reason and
interpretation, grammarians have differed." Al-Farrāʾ said: "The meaning of 'Allāhumma'
is 'Yā Allāhu umma bi-khayrin (O Allāh, direct us to good).'" Al-Zajjāj
said: "This is a grave error, for whenever there is a hamzah that is
dropped, the predominant speech is to bring it. One says 'waylu ummih'
and 'waylu ummihi,' and the most common is to affirm the hamzah.
If it were as this speaker says, it would be permissible to say 'Allāhu
ummum' and 'Allāhu umma,' and it would be necessary for the 'yā'
of address to be attached, because the Arabs say 'Yā Allāhu ighfir lanā,'
and no Arab said except 'Allāhumma,' and none said 'Yā Allāhumma.'
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Say: Allāhumma, Originator of the heavens and
the earth.' So this statement is invalid from several angles: one, the 'yā'
is not in the speech; two, this omitted element was not spoken in its original
form as its like is spoken; and three, that which he mentioned is not placed
before the supplication." Al-Zajjāj said: "Al-Farrāʾ claimed that the ḍammah on
the hāʾ is the ḍammah of the hamzah that was in 'umm.'
This is absurd—to abandon the ḍammah that is the indicator for calling
a singular entity and to place on the name of Allah the ḍammah of 'umma'—this
is deviance regarding the name of Allah." He said: "Al-Farrāʾ claimed that our
saying 'halumma' is similar, its origin being 'hal umma,' but
it is actually 'lumma' and the 'hāʾ' is for alerting." He
said: "Al-Farrāʾ said the 'yā' can be said with 'Allāhumma,'
saying 'Yā Allāhumma,'" and cited poetry that cannot be used as
evidence:
"Wa-mā ʿalayki an taqūlī kullamā ṣallayti aw sabbahṭi: Yā Allāhumā, irdud ʿalaynā
shaykhanā musallamā" (And it is not upon you that whenever you pray or
glorify, you say: O Allāhumma, return our elder to us safely).
Majority Opinion: Abū Isḥāq said: "Al-Khalīl, Sibawayh, and all grammarians trusted for their knowledge said: 'Allāhumma' means 'Yā Allāhu,' and the doubled mīm is a substitute for the 'yā,' because they did not find the 'yā' with this mīm in a single word, and they found the name 'Allāh' used with 'yā' when they did not mention the mīm at the end of the word. Thus they knew the mīm at the end of the word is in the position of the 'yā' at the beginning. The ḍammah on the hāʾ is the ḍammah of the singular noun being called, and the mīm is opened because it is vowelless and preceded by a vowelless mīm."
Al-Farrāʾ on Dialects: Al-Farrāʾ
said: "Some Arabs say, when dropping the mīm, 'Yā Allāhu ighfir lī'
with the hamzah, and some say 'Yā Allāhi' without hamzah.
Whoever drops the hamzah does so rightly, because it is an alif-lām like
the lām in 'al-ḥarth' among names and the like. Whoever
pronounces the hamzah imagines the hamzah from the letter
since it is not dropped from it." He recited:
"Mubārakun huwwa wa-man sammāhu, / ʿala ismika, Allāhumma yā Allāhu"
(Blessed is He and whoever named Him, / by Your name, O Allāhumma, O Allāh).
He said: "'Allāhumma' became so frequent in speech that its mīm was
lightened in some dialects." Al-Kisāʾī said: "The Arabs say 'Yā Allāhu
ighfir lī' and 'Yallāhi ighfir lī.'" He said: "I heard al-Khalīl
say: 'They dislike diminishing anything from this name—Yā Allāhu'—meaning
they do not say 'Yalāhu.'"
Al-Zajjāj on Quranic Usage: Al-Zajjāj, regarding His, Exalted is He, statement "ʿĪsā ibn Maryam said: 'Allāhumma rabbanā...'" mentioned that Sibawayh said "Allāhumma" is like a sound and is not describable, and "rabbanā" is in the accusative as a second call.
Al-Azharī's Citation: Al-Azharī
recited Qutrub's line:
"Innī idhā mā muʿẓamun alammā / aqūlu: Yā Allāhumma yā Allāhumā"
(Whenever a great one distresses me, I say: O Allāhumma! O Allāhumma!)
He said: "The evidence for the correctness of al-Farrāʾ and Abū al-ʿAbbās's view
that 'Allāhumma' means 'Yā Allāhu umma' is the Arabs'
insertion of 'yā' upon 'Allāhumma'."
Poetic Example of Shortening: And the
poet's saying:
"Alā lā bāraka Allāhu fī Suhaylin, / idhā mā Allāhu bāraka fī al-rijāl"
(Indeed, may Allah not bless Suhayl, / if Allāh blesses among men).
He meant "Allāhu" but shortened it out of poetic necessity.
Ilāhah as Snake: Al-Ilāhah is a large snake—from Thaʿlab. It is also al-hilālu (the crescent).
Ilāhah as a Place: Ilāhah is
the name of a place in Al-Jazīrah. A poet said:
"Kafā ḥazanan an yarḥala al-rakbu ghudwatan, / wa-uṣbiḥa fī ʿulā Ilāhata
thāwiyā" (Enough sorrow that the caravan departs at morn, / and I remain,
lodged in high Ilāhah).
He had been bitten by a snake. Ibn Barī said: "Some linguists give the
narration: 'wa-utraka fī ʿulyā Ulāhata' with a ḍammah on the hamzah."
He said: "It is the cave of Samāwat Kalb." Ibn Barī said: "This is the correct
one, for there the speaker of this line is buried—he is Afnūn al-Taghlibī, his
name is Ṣuraym ibn Maʿshar..." [The note continues with details about his
death]. And before it:
"La-ʿamruka, mā yadrī al-fatā kayfa yattaqī, / idhā huwa lam yajʿal lahu
Allāhu wāqiyā" (By your life, the youth knows not how to be cautious, / if
he does not make Allah his protector).
