Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الثاء والواو والباء قياسٌ صحيحٌ من أصلٍ واحد، وهو العَوْدُ والرُّجوع. يقال ثاب يثُوب إذا رَجَع.

والثّوابُ من الأجْر والجزاء أمرٌ يُثابُ إليه

 الملبوس محتملٌ أن يكون من هذا القياس؛ لأنّه يُلْبَس ثم يُلبَس ويثاب إليه

That it leads to the basic perception of returning and reverting to from where one had left.

And it signifies reward and requital, affair, effort returning to him.

And it signifies dress, perhaps by analogy that it turns again to him.

 

Lane Lexicon: He, or it, (a thing) returned; ثوّب , he returned to a place to which he had come before; or it returned.  inf. n. تثْوِيبٌ; (T, Mgh;) God recompensed, compensated, requited, or rewarded, him:

Classical Lexicons

3. It reflects the act of returning to original state or position. It is used to describe human dress/clothing composed of different garments meant to cover his entire body. The same is the perception with human clothing which is infolded in the Root, by analogy. The moment man wears his dress comprising clothing he returns to the original state he was in before being deceived by the Satan.

(It is also used to refer to collection of water in the well after water had been drawn from it. A ditch/well to which water returns; stones staked upon top of one another; to return, to come back, to come to a gathering; a place of gathering, resort; garments, clothes, award, recompense.

  • And had they heartily accepted belief and had they endeavoured to attain salvation, a great award from Allah the Exalted would have been certainly far better [than what they had opted] —

  • And remember that dying is not left at the will and discretion of an individual but it happens with the explicit permission of Allah the Exalted. The point in time of his death is decreed and is recorded in writing.

  • And should someone aspire for award of worldly life: Our Majesty would give him out of her (worldly life) beneficences.

  • And should someone desire award of the Hereafter: Our Majesty would give him out of her beneficences.

  • And Our Majesty keep rewarding incessantly those who openly acknowledge with thanks and gratitude. [3:145]


  • Thereby in response to their prayer and excellent conduct Allah the Exalted granted them the worldly award; and the award of the Hereafter is par excellence.

  • And Allah the Exalted appreciates and approves for nearness those who conduct moderately, gracefully and generously. [3:148]


  • Thereat, their Sustainer Lord has responded for them, conveying:  "I will never let an act of a performer amongst you, whether be a male or a female, go unappreciated.

  • You are associates of one another.

  • Therefore, those who emigrated and were expelled from their homeland; and suffered difficulties in My prescribed way; and participated in war; and got killed in war are assured: I will most certainly cause the deletion-distancing away from them their lapses and shortcomings.

  •  And fought and got killed, indeed I will delete/distance away from them their lapses/shortcomings —

  • And I will most certainly cause them honourably escorted inside the gardens, side by which flow streams of water.

  • In the manner of returning to original abode which is life time achievement award for them by the grace of Allah the Exalted.

  • Realize it; Allah the Exalted — the best award is always from the grace of Him. [3:195]


  • Should there be someone who is desirous and seeks the worldly award/return: He should know that the worldly award and award of the Hereafter both are the grant by Allah the Exalted.

  • Know it; Allah the Exalted is ever listener and observer. [4:134]


  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] tell them (people of Book-Jews): "May l disclose to you a requital loaded with more irritating disquiet than this revenge of yours, it is retribution by the decree of Allah the Exalted?

  • It is for him whom Allah the Exalted has discarded as condemned and cursed; and He the Exalted has decreed criminal cognizance upon him."

  • And He the Exalted had declared the aberrant amongst them as apes and swine —

  • And worse sufferer is he who served the defiant/aberrant.

  • They are the people who are mischievous, by their disposition, behavioural settlement. And they are distantly lost away from the even course to destination. [5:60] 


  • Thereby, Allah the Exalted awarded them accordingly what they had desirously prayed:

  • Gardens where streams flow on lower side by it; they will reside therein permanently.

  • And this is the reward for those who conduct moderately, gracefully and generously. [5:85]


  • (Thereat he realized) The protection and guarding in true sense in time and space is always for Allah the Exalted to take care.

  • He the Exalted is the best, with regard to returning for protection; and the best, with regard to trusting for the finality of affairs. [18:44]


  • The wealth and the sons are a source of attraction of the life of lowly world.

  • Take note, the persisting perfect-righteous deeds are best in the judgment of your Sustainer Lord as source of return, and is best regarding expectation of positive outcomes.  [18:46]


  • And Allah the Exalted enhances those who have guided their selves aright, improving insight and clarity of guidance (Qur’ān).

  • Take note, the persisting perfect-righteous deeds are better in the judgment of your Sustainer Lord as source of return, and are better in terms of hopefulness. [19:76]


  • And those whom knowledge had been given said, "Woe to you —

  • The recognition of achievement for award by Allah the Exalted is far better a blessing for the one who believed and acted perfectly.

  • However, she (blessing) is not confronted except to those who are steadfast coolly perseverant". [28:80]


  • Indeed Allah the Exalted pleasantly acknowledged and appreciated the act of the Believers —

  • When they were willingly and affectionately pledging themselves in allegiance to you the Messenger [Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] under the Tree since He fully knew that which was in their hearts.

  • Thereat, He the Exalted bestowed upon them the tranquillity and calmness and awarded them a quick victory — [48:18]


In the meanings of collection, gathering

  • Further be informed; When Our Majesty appointed "The House" as the place of pilgrimage-return-assembly, awesome for the people; and declared it a place of safety-shelter-amnesty:

  • We had ordered to the effect: "you people adopt a part of standing place of Iebra'heim [علیہ السلام] around the House; where he stood while raising it, as assembly place of As-sa'laat: Time Bound Protocol of Servitude and allegiance".

  • Moreover, We had imposed a pledge-enjoined duty upon Iebra'heim and Iesma'eile [علیہم السلام].

  • The assigned responsibility was: "You both manage and maintain the cleanliness-sanctity of My House for those people who walk around it; and for those who stay around it; and for those who perform act of kneeling coupled with the trait as performers of  prostration.". [2:125]


  • [reverting from parenthetic to battlefield panic, Allah averted you from enemy] Recall when you were ascending in a state that you were not even turning to anyone while the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] was instructing you from your rear.

  • Thereby, He the Exalted caused you to withdraw and regroup at previous higher location veiled in ensuing confusion and anxiety so that you might not suffer plaintiveness for that what went out of your reach and nor for adversity that had befallen upon you.

  • And Allah the Exalted is always fully aware of that what you people do. [3:153]


  • Has it not caused to bounce back upon the Non-Believers that which they used to innovatively do? [83:36]


In the meanings of dress

  • Look at them! They fold their chests thinking that they might hide their duality from Him the Exalted.

  • The fact is that when they veil by their clothing; He the Exalted knows what they conceal and what they project.

  • Remain mindful;  He the Exalted is absolutely aware of what is possessed inside the chests. [11:05]


  • They are the people — Gardens of pleasant abode are in wait for them, streams will be flowing side-by them —

  • They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold —

  • And they people wear green garments made from natural yarn of fine silk, and lightening effect producing cloth: brocade —

  • They will lean therein on adorned sofas.

  • What an excellent reward and most appropriate living abode. [18:31]


  • These are two divergent groups, these people divergently argued about their Sustainer Lord —

  • Thereby, those who disavowed, heat absorbing dresses - veils are ready for them;  [scorching temperature in Hell-Prison]

  • [when they will ask for water/rain] Showered upon them from over their head would be the hot water — [22:19]


  • O those people/you, who self proclaim to have accepted-become believers, listen;

  • The Men and Women who are under control and in submission to you people-House Servants should make it a habit to seek prior permission and appointment of you people —

  • Likewise, those amongst you-in household who have not yet crossed over to puberty: age of experiencing wet dream —

  • This restriction are for three points in time—

  • These three periods in time are: before performing the Protocol of Servitude and allegiance of True Dawn to Sun Rise —

  • The second time is at Mid-day-Noon of Noon selected by you people for laying of clothes [from your back-lower area] —

  • And third is after the Ass-sa'laat: Protocol of Servitude and allegiance of darkened Night.

  • These three timings of "Privacy-Sex" are exclusive occasions for you people-married couples.

  • There is no harm and constraint for you people and for them [restrained to disturb privacy] after these three timings, that they are frequent visitors for you, some of you visiting others in the house.

  • This is how Allah the Exalted explicitly explicates Aa'ya'at: Verbal Passages of Qur’ān rendering each point-concept-situation distinctly isolated and crystal clear for you people [for comprehension as was promised to the Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] —

  • Remain cognizant; Allah the Exalted is the Fountain and Setter of knowledge-science of visible and invisible domains, realities, considerations; and the Infinitely Just Supreme Administrator of the created realm. [24:58]


  • Take note, the aged singles, whether virgins, widows or divorcee in the women folk who have no desire and intention for Nikah -marriage —

  • Thereby, no blame - objection shall lie upon them in laying off their extra sheet upon chest in the manner unlike of those women who project their bosoms rendering their selves alluring —

  • However, their modestly retaining extra sheets is a better option for them.

  • Remain cautious; Allah the Exalted is eternally the Listener; the Absolute Knowledgeable. [24:60]


  • And indeed whenever I invited them so that You the Exalted may forgive them—

  • They inserted their fingers in their ears as insulation and consciously made themselves veiled with their garments/traditions—

  • And they persisted to remain tied with their system/traditions and they demonstrated self-pride having made themselves obsessed with pride of superiority and grandeur. [71:07]


  • The manner for such praises and glorification is that in case your clothing has become unclean/impure, thereat, you wash/clean/purify your clothes before performing act of glorification — [74:04]

 

  • Garments green made from natural yarn of fine silk, and lightening effect producing cloth [brocade] is their worn dress —

  • They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold —

  • And their Sustainer Lord will provide them to drink the vine/hard drink void of any admixture-negative effect. [76:21]


 

Once it is used for women in contrast to virgins.

  • Supposedly if he had [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] alienated you: the wives; That He the Exalted might have transformed for him as spouses better than some of you from amongst Muslims; believing, devoted, repentant, allegiant, fast observing; widows and virgins.". [66:05]
