Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الحاء والراء والثاء أصلانِ متفاوتان: أحدهما الجمع والكَسْب، والآخر أنْ يُهْزَل الشيء

That it has two basic divergent meanings of collecting and earnings and secondly to attenuate a thing.

الحَرْثُ والحِراثَةُ: العَمل في الأَرض زَرْعاً كان أَو غَرْسا

It signifies tilling of the Earth for agriculture, planting.

Lane's Lexicon:  Plantation, cultivated land, fields of agriculture land, plough to plough, to sow seeds, to till, tillage, earnings, to work for one's living, study the footprints.

Classical Lexicon

  • He  (Mūsā [alai'his'slaam]) told them: "He the Exalted says that it is a she-cow. Its way of life is symbolized by; she is neither yoked that she tills the land to and fro preparing it for cultivation, nor she is yoked with blinders on eyes that she irrigates the crop fields moving circularly.

  • She is kept safe, secure, at peace, healthy tranquillity and dynamic balance. Her life feature now is that absolutely no deformity, spot, variation in colour is present in it".

  • They said (to Mūsā): "Now you have come with the exact distinctly explicit fact." 

  • Thereat, being cornered they sacrificed her in a state that they had no wish-intention doing it. [2:71]


  • And when he about-faced, he attempts with argumentative skill for creating disorder-imbalance-distortions-confusion - spreading wicked and unsound ideas in the society; and for spoiling the land and the youth.

  • And be mindful that Allah the Exalted does not appreciate-approve the causing and state of distortions-imbalances-disequilibrium — [2:205]


  • The wives of you Men have the characteristic of that of action and state of "cultivating a field" who have accomplished cleansing respectively for you.

  • Therefore, you husbands come to your respective "cultivating activity in agricultural field" discretionally, when (during prescribed timings 24:58) and how (posture) you felt convenient-desirable.

  • And you make advances-secure-care-send for your future.

  • And sincerely endeavour to attain the protection from Allah the Exalted —

  • And remain aware that you will be presented before Him the Exalted for accountability.

  • And you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] guarantee-ensure the glad tidings to the heartily believing people. [2:223]


  • Know it; the love of erotic predilections - stimulators has become alluring for the people (Men), fetish from the women —

  • And liking for having sons has become a longing for people —

  • So has become the desire to have a state of hoarded abundance of Gold and Silver —

  • And the marked-pedigree horses [top of the line products], and abundance of herbivore-mammals/livestock, and for plenty of harvesting lands.

  • This is the wealth-sustenance-provision of the transitory worldly life.

  • Mind it that Allah the Exalted grants the most appropriate return and abode by His Grace. [3:14]


  • [their wealth and progeny will be of no avail] The similarity-illustration of that which they (Non-Believers) spend in this worldly life is:

  • Like such a wind; creaking and cold effect is inherent within it. She descended upon cultivation of a people who did injustice to themselves. Thereby, she destroyed the cultivation.

  • Understand it, Allah the Exalted did no injustice to them but in fact they kept doing injustice to their selves. [3:117]


  • Know the tactics of the ruling religious elite; They assigned a part, as the share for Allah the Exalted, of what He yielded in cultivation and mammals.

  • Having done this, they said on their hypothetical assumption: "This much is apportioned exclusively for Allah the Exalted, and this much is for our associates."

  • Thereby, that portion which they had excepted for their associates, it does not, for reason, reach towards Allah the Exalted [not to needy poor but is usurped by themselves] —

  • And that portion which they had excepted for Allah, it eventually reaches their associates.

  • Evil and abominable is what they order/decide for people. [6:136]


  • And they told people, based upon their own presumption: "These, such and such mammals and tillage are sacrosanct —

  • Except him whom we permit/decide no one will eat them —

  • And such and such mammals are whose backs for riding are forbidden/sanctified."

  • And the fact is that these are such mammals upon which they do not pronounce the Name of Allah, falsely forging lies attributing upon Him the Exalted.

  • Soon shall He the Exalted requite them for what they keep imaginatively innovate myths. [6:138]


  • And mention about Da'ued and Sulie'maan [alai'him'slaam] when they both were adjudging in the matter of  the sheep of people that scattered at night in [without owner's will, damaging] the crop-field.

  • And Our Majesty were watching for the command/decision to be given to them/owners of sheep, [21:78]


  • Whoever was desiring and seeking the yield of the Hereafter, Our Majesty would increase in his yield as reward for him —

  • And whoever was desiring and seeking the yield of the Earthly world, Our Majesty would keep give him from her—

  • And none at all share shall be left for him to benefit in the Hereafter. [42:20]


  • Have you seen/considered about that which you people sow in the land? [56:63]

  • Are you the one who cause it sprout/grow? Or We are the One Who sprout/grow it?  [56:64]


  • Saying, "you go and reach upon your cultivated land during dawn and early morning if you people were to cut the produce." [68:22]
