and Superlative]: the one who enacts or upon whom is enacted the base
meaning of the Root the most
The noun of pre-eminence.
In the superlative sense,
these adjectives must always have the article, or else be in the
construct state.
Pattern/Construction Design
For Masculine:
أَفْعَلُ
For Feminine: فُعْلى
Peculiarities:
* It is derived only from the Active Voice
Primary Verb.
** It is not derived from the Derivative
verbs, Passive Voice Verbs, Defective verbs, Non inflective verbs, Words
whose meaning is associated with colour, defects/deformities, or embellishments
because they themselves are on the form/pattern
أَفْعَلُ
; and such word whose meanings is inappropriate for superlative, like death.
Meaning
In Arabic, there is only one word which is used to
indicate on the root meaning being carried out to both a greater extent as
well as the greatest extent (comparative and superlative). This noun can occupy most grammatical positions in a
sentence. Another point to
note is that, unlike the participles, the meaning of this noun is usually
quite transparent and can be induced without the use of a dictionary.
Furthermore, like the participles, it can be used as
both a noun and an adjective.
This entity can be used in many grammatical ways:
1)
as an indefinite
noun
a)
followed by مِنْ
b)
followed by a
clarification (تَمْيِيْز)
2)
as a definite noun
a)
in a possessive
construction (مُضَاف)
b)
as an adjective (صِفَة)
c)
We may reiterate it:
This is used in one of the following four
manner:-
(1) This is followed by a preposition and a
genitive noun.
(2) This is attached to an indefinite noun in
Possessive phrase;
(3) The superlative noun has prefixed definite
article.
(4) The superlative noun is attached to a
definite noun, in possessive phrase.
Whenever the superlative noun is used in the
first and second method, it will remain on the pattern of masculine
whether that which is described is feminine, dual or plural.
However
when it is used in the third manner, there must be agreement in
gender and number between the superlative noun and that which it
describes.
In its use in the fourth manner it is permissible to utilize
the superlative noun in agreement or otherwise.
Sometimes the superlative noun is devoid of its
superlative meanings and is used in the meanings of verbal adjective or
the Active participle as used in 6:124 and 30:27.
Two words Khairun and Sharrun are used in the meanings of superlative as
a contraction of Aakhairun and aashurrun.
