Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

 (مقاييس اللغة)

الخاء والميم والراء أصلٌ واحد يدلُّ على التغطية، والمخالطةِ في سَتْر. فالخَمْرُ: الشَّراب المعروف.

That it leads to the perception of covering, veiling, hedging, and hiding a thing; and to intermingle convivially with the shelter, coat, body. And its use for intoxicants is well known.

Semantic domain: Intoxication - Alcoholic Beverages

  • They people seek information from you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] about the Alcoholic Beverages and act of gambling.

  • You tell them; "A severe dilapidation-act of great sin is inherent within both of them. However, sources of profitability-immediate-momentary benefits are apparently found within both of them for certain people.

  • Take note that the dilapidating-sinful inherent characteristic of both is much greater than the immediate gain from both".

  • And they ask you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] as to what possession should they keep spending.

  • You tell them; "You people spend that whichever you can efface-spare".

  • Like this organized with thoroughness and careful attention to detail information in response to your questions; Allah the Exalted elaborates for you people the Aa'ya'at: verbal unitary passages rendering each point distinct-distinguished-isolated and crystal clear.

  • The purpose is that you people might self indulge in critical thinking; to reflect-ponder rationally without overlapping passions and emotions. [2:219]

Arabic words originate from Roots. Each Root has specific, defined, distinct, conspicuous, apparent perception folded in it. Words, originating from these Roots on various well defined patterns-moulds-structuring frames, retain the original perception infolded in the Root, dominantly and conspicuously, with additional meanings and connotation, shades and colours added by the peculiar pattern-placing of vowels-syllabification, and addition of consonants. Moreover, relational aspect of the semantic field will also influence and add connotations to the word. Hence; the meanings, perception and connotation of an Arabic Word is the composite whole of the perception infolded in its Root, coupled with meanings associated with its pattern, and its relation to the semantic field where it is used. It signifies that the basic meanings of a Root and word do not exhaust when they are used in a different semantic field, relational area, while necessarily retaining the base meanings.

The choice of words in the Grand Qur'aan is so superb that they luminously expose the meanings of the words in the context. The meanings infolded in this Root are vividly exposed by use of phrase: made from it by its relationship with other words:

  • And that they should not make eminently noticeable their attraction-bosoms; exception is for that which has naturally swelled out above the surface.

  • However, they should strike barrier obscuring their surfaced bosoms by putting their unsown sheets upon their chests.

  • And they should not expose-make noticeable their attraction-bosoms by removing extra veil/sheet except before their husbands;
