Interrogative Particle-[حرف الإسْتِفهام]

Occurrences: 93

It is an interrogative particle which seeks affirmation only [التَّصدِيقُ], i.e. it seeks only to affirm that attribution in the expression is true or not. The appropriate reply is either yes or no, meaning affirmation or denial of the attribution. However when Hamza is used as interrogative particle its reply is not limited to affirmation and may contain other element of apprehension or thought.

It differs in another four aspects also from Interrogative hamza [همزة استفهام]:

1)    Lack of being entered upon an appositive particle. It means that this interrogation particle does not precede an appositive particle, rather the appositive particle is placed first like . This is contrary to hamza [همزة استفهام] where appositive particle follows the hamza like .

2)     This is not used in conjunction with condition particles whereas interrogative hamza [همزة استفهام] is used in this manner.

3)   This is not entered upon a nominative word which is followed by a verb.

4)  This interrogative particle is particular to positive expressions while Hamza enters in negative expressions as well.
