Negative and Jussive particle

  • General information about those who have disavowed the Creator

  • It is same in effect upon them whether you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] have cautioned them of potential consequences or have so far not cautioned them

  • They believe not. [for reasons hereinafter given]. [2:06]

: It is a Negative and Jussive particle. When: is prefixed to a imperfect verb, it causes the following changes:

(1) The meaning of imperfect verb are into a negative past tense with emphasis.

(2) The indicative mood of the imperfect verb [مُضَارِع مَرْفُوعٌ] becomes jussive mood [مُضَارِع مَجْزُومٌ] which means replacement of vowel sign  ـُ  on the last consonant of the verb by placing a small sign [] called [جَزْمٌ].

(3) The consonant and vowel [نَ,نِ] termed as نُون إِعْرَابِي is dropped or elided from the imperfect verb; [these are seven; (1) third person masculine dual (2) third person masculine plural (3) third person feminine dual, (4) second person masculine dual, (5)second person masculine plural, (6) second person feminine singular, (7) second person feminine dual].

Another negation and jussive particle is: which is also a time adverb. Differences between and are related to following matters:

1. With Lamma conditional particle is not associated whereas with Lam it is permissible as in 5:67;

  • O you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] listen; you keep pronouncing and transcribing to people that which has compositely been sent to you by your Sustainer Lord.

  • [don't wait for response and don't feel grieved that they don't accept it] It is necessary because should you not keep delivering what has been sent; thereby you would not finish and bring to an end the miscellany of message of Him the Exalted.

  • Remain assured; Allah the Exalted will keep protecting you from people [who are getting annoyed and irritated with incoming message and wish that nothing further is communicated].

  • Be aware; Allah the Exalted does not guide against their will the people who persistently and deliberately refuse to accept. [5:67]

2. With Lamma there is continuous negation from a point in the past until the present time. With Lam, there is the possibility of continuous negation, however, the possibility of lack of continuance also exists.

3. Lamma is only used to negate the near past while Lam is used to negate the distant past.

4. With the particle Lamma there is an expectation that the action will occur. On the other hand, when Lam is used , there is no expectation of that action to occur afterwards.
