Classical Arabic lexicons state
that it is contra of belief, believing,
accepting; i.e. disbelief, rejecting, disavowing; and that it signifies
the act of concealing, veiling; covering and hedging. Its
contra. Root:
ء م ن
which signifies convergent-interrelated concept of trusteeing which
is contr. of betrayal, disloyalty, dishonesty; and signifies
tranquility of the heart; and lastly the authentication,
attestation, confirmation, certification of a statement,
proposition, information.
This is one of the most important
words of Divine Discourse and relates to those concepts that are the
essence - basic purpose of Grand Qur'aan. The basic and primary
classification of the audience of Grand Qur'aan is with reference to
their attitude of seeking or accepting the explanation for the first
cause of their own state of being in existence. The basic
distinction is whether man is rational or irrational and its judging
criteria is whether or not he acts according to the basic instinct
of mind shared by humanity that says everything needs an explanation
why it is.
At the very first time of use of
words stemming from these Roots, it is about acknowledging the
existence and presence of the Creator.

What have they
rejected to believe? About whom they
deny any knowledge of, responsibility for, and association with?
They have denied acknowledging the existence and presence of Allah the
Exalted. The do so without any cogent reason for which people are
asked:

-
How could;
[being men of intellect]
it is so surprising, you refuse to acknowledge Allah the Exalted,
while knowing that you were
pieces of matter whereby
[determined purpose,
by design/will]
He
the Exalted made you people living
[created you from matter
