Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

الراء والباء يدلُّ على أُصولٍ. فالأول إصلاح الشيءِ والقيامُ عليه. فالرّبُّ: المالكُ، والخالقُ، والصَّاحب

That basically it leads to the perception of looking after and perfecting a thing and accomplishment upon it; thereby it denotes the master, the creator and the lord. [He seems to have erred by saying that it means creator because this word is also used for human master - lord who are obviously not the creator of their subject - servants - slaves]

The words stemming from this Root that are used in the Divine Discourse are all nouns. It is a common noun and NOT a term as is erroneously referred in some encyclopedia articles. It is a two-way relational word and signifies master-servant relationship when used for humans (12:41;12:42;12:50) and its plural is . The other co-relation word is: - subject -servant - allegiant, from Root: ع ب د. But when used for Allah the Exalted, we should instead use "the Sustainer Lord" as it incorporates quite nearly the basic perception of the Root.

It thus signifies a relationship between the Independent and the dependant. All the semantic features that can be associated with "Sustainer Lord" like caregiver, provider, sustainer are inherent in the Root. Both these co-relation words also embed semantically the nature and self assumed responsibilities of the Lord; and obligations of the subject - servant.

The word: is never used as isolated word with the definite article. It is only once used as isolated disambiguation accusative word. Except at following two places where this noun is used in absolute indefinite state in adjectival phrases, it is always used in possessive construction as first noun of possessive phrase.

  • Certainly there has been a tangible sign to take heed in their dwelling place for the people of Saba;

  • The sign was two gardens on the right and on the left;

  • [they were asked] "You people eat from the sustenance of your Sustainer Lord and express gratitude and be grateful to Him"

  • A fertile city and Oft-Forgiving Sustainer Lord. [34:15]

  • [and most pleasing] A word of felicitation from the Sustainer Lord, the Fountain of Infinite Mercy. [36:58]

 

Primarily, this word is used to express the universal lordship of Allah - Ar'Reh'maan the Exalted. This concept of universal lordship is the primary recognition of Allah - Ar'Reh'maan the Exalted. It is expressed in possessive phrase: the Sustainer Lord of universes, all that exists. It is stated by consecutive possessive phrases: Sustainer Lord of everything - entire physical realm:

  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] tell them: "Do you expect me to search for someone other than Allah, as a lord while the fact is that He the Exalted is the Sustainer Lord of all that exists?

  • Be cautious; Every soul yields not the impact of maneuvers but upon herself;

  • And no bearer of burdens will bear lifting the burdens of others;

  • Afterwards, the escort of you people will be towards your Sustainer Lord;

  • Thereat, He the Exalted will remind you people that about which you purposely kept differing." [6:164]

This is the only instance where the word in accusative absolute case is used in isolation as disambiguation accusative [تمييز].

Though the phrases: and encompass everything that exists and existed upon which the universal lordship of Allah the Exalted overarches, the lordship is also mentioned by reference to individual entities. It collocates with such words that indicate the attributes which are the semantic features of its parent Root. 

This relational word is mostly used in persuasive contexts explaining what the Sustainer Lord has done and does for the subjects - humanity and to remind the subjects about their obligations the failing of which would make it incumbent upon the Sovereign Lord to exercise authority of infliction. Awarding punishment to subjects for irresponsible and irrational conduct is the essential semantic feature of the word "Lord-".

Words of personal relationships appeal to passion of the audience and have persuasive force even when it are command to do certain act. In the very first address to humanity this relational word is used:

  • O you the Mankind, listen attentively;

  • You demonstrate subservience and allegiance to your Sustainer Lord. He the Exalted has created you people and those who existed in times before you.

  • This demonstrative allegiance acknowledging your selves as subjects might let you adopt rational conduct avoiding unrestrained moves in reverence and fear of your Creator and Sustainer Lord.  [2:21]

Please recall that I stated in parenthesis in the beginning about the perception of word: mentioned by error as creator by highly respectable and learned Ibn Faris. Here is the evidence in this Ayah. The relative pronoun: and its relative verbal clause: is the adjectival clause for: which is the object of preceding verb. This adjectival description is exclusive for the Sustainer Lord of everything. It is important to note the delicacy of choice of a word as the object of the verb: along with possessive pronoun, denoting the Sustainer Lord of you people. At other places the same command is:  meaning "demonstrate subservience and allegiance to Allah the Exalted" (4:36).

  • Your Sustainer Lord is He Who had rendered the Earth for you people as a floor/flat open space

  • And the Sky as an overarching canopy.

  • Moreover, He the Exalted descended water from the Sky.

  • Thereat, with this Water, He the Exalted brought out a variety of fruits-shrubs, as means of subsistence for you people.

  • Thereat having seen the world around you as integrated whole you people should not ascribe participators with reference to Allah the Exalted;

  • While you people have logical understanding of there being none alike [realization of universe as a coherent unit manifesting Sole Creator]. [2:22]

The lordship of Allah the Exalted is unique since it is not merely Master/Lord - servant/subject equation but a relationship of the Creator and the Created. The characteristic and responsibility of Sustainer Lord is to meet the physical and honour needs of subjects. He the Exalted has done it by fashioning the universe we are in to serve our physical and honour needs.

Who is the Sustainer Lord of universes and humanity? It is mentioned by proper names Allah and Ar'Reh'maan, the Exalted:

  • Remember the aforesaid about Allah the Exalted, the Sustainer Sovereign Lord of you people.

  • Realize it about miscellany of iela'aha: deities that are uncritically admired, adorned and worshipped; none of them is alive; none of them organizes, administers or sustains others except He the Alone Sustainer Lord.

  • He is the Creator-Primal Originator of entire physical realm.

  • Therefore, you people be subservient-allegiant-subjects to Him exclusively.

  • Know it; He the Exalted is the Guardian-Protector-Disposer of Affairs of physical realm. [6:102]

  • Indeed the Sustainer Lord of you people is Allah the Exalted Who had innovatively created the Skies and the Earth in a time duration of six days [reckoned outside your universe];

  • Thereafter, He the Exalted ascended to the Supreme Sovereign Seat-Throne [beyond Skies of universe]

  • He the Exalted causes the night to wrap-veil the Day; the Night seeks the day, seemingly incessantly incited - in motion.

  • And He the Exalted created the Sun, the Moon and the Stars as objects subjected to set discipline by His Command.

  • Unquestionably, the Primal Creation and the Command-Ordaining-organizing is the domain exclusive for Him the Exalted.

  • Allah the Exalted, the Sustainer Lord of the universes-all that exists, is the Omnipresent, the Perpetual, the Absolute. [7:54]

  • [And as for their other excuse] Know it, certainly Haroon [alai'his'slaam] had earlier told them, "O my nation! You are indeed put into liquefying trial by this crafting of calf-effigy and their assertion about it;

  • It is a certain fact the Sustainer Lord of you people is Ar'Reh'maan. Therefore, follow me in letter and spirit, and wholeheartedly accept my command." [20:90]

  •  You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] ask them: "Does the Blind and the Man of Vision equates with other?

  • Or are the layers of darkness and the visible light identical/alike?"

  • Or have they declared associates for Allah the Exalted who have created like His creation for which reason that creation has created confusion for them? [it is sensitive for them, will keep mum therefore]

  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce, "Allah the Exalted is the Creator-Primal Originator of each and entire physical realm."

  • And He the Exalted is the Solitary, the Almighty, Absolutely Dominant over all. [13:16]

  • He replied, "You have indeed come to know that these Multiple Signs have not been sent except by the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth, a visible eye opener documentary.

  • Take note that indeed I certainly think, O Fir'aoun, that you are a man prevented to behave rationally having been held guilty." [17:102]

  • And when they became determined, We gave their hearts concentration of steadfastness.

  • Thereby that said amongst themselves, "Our Sustainer Lord is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth. Never will we call other than Him as various iela'aha: godheads.

  • No doubt, the moment had we said that, we would have went far away from truth. [18:14]

  • O You the Messenger! We the Angels do not descend at our discretion but descend by the command of your Sustainer Lord.

  • The encompassment of that whatever was destined in time-line in front of us [past] and that whatever is destined in time-line on our back [future] and that whatever is destined in-between it [present] is exclusively for Him the Exalted;

  • And  the Sustainer Lord of you is never ever forgetful. [19:64]

  • Ar'Reh'maan the Exalted is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and whatever exists between the two;

  • Therefore, you the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] do continue calling/inviting people to be subservient-allegiant to Him: Ar'Reh'maan and remain steadfast in demonstrating servitude for Him.

  • Do you know any parallel of Personal Name for Him?" [19:65]

  • He replied, "No, I am not enjoying fun, the fact is that your Sustainer Lord is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth, the One Who innovatively created them.

  • And I am upon that for you from amongst those who witness/see" [21:56]

  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] ask them, "Who is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies numerically seven in number;

  • And the Sustainer Lord of the Exalted Throne of Sovereignty." [23:86]

  • Mūsā [alai'his'slaam defining the word "Worlds"] said, "He the Exalted is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and all that which is in between them;

  • If you peopleall in Leveewere who inferentially make sure attaining certainty." [26:24]

  • The Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and whatever is in between two of them

  • And the Sustainer Lord of all the East/each point of Sunrise." [37:05]

  • The Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and whatever is in between two of them;

  • The Dominantly All-Pervasive and the Oft-forgiving".  [38:66]

 


  • Infinitely Glorious and Elevated and above such needs/support/weakness is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth; and the Sustainer Lord of Throne of Absolute Sovereigntyof all that they people conjecturally attribute". [43:82]

  • Your Sustainer Lord is the Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and whatever is in between two of them;

  • If you people have been the convinced ones. [44:07]

  • And the Supremacy and Sublimity in the Skies and the Earth is for Him the Exalted.

  • Be aware, He the Exalted is Pervasively dominant and the Infinitely Just Supreme Administrator of the created realm, visible and invisible.   [45:37]

  • The Sustainer Lord of the Skies and the Earth and whatever is in between two of them is Ar'Reh'maan, the Exalted.

  • They do not have authority from him for address. [78:37]
