Misjudgment by a young Male Whale saves Yunus
alahissalam.
This Ayah: Unitary Verbal passage of Grand Qur'aan begins
with:
[wāw],
the Recommencing/Conjunction particle. It is a
discourse coordinator that signals the speaker's
identification of an upcoming unit which is coordinate in structure to some
prior unit; here the episodes of nations of the Messengers.
:
It is a Verb-Like Particle, that
emphasizes the certainty of the following predicate about its subject.
[alai'his'slaam]:
It
is the Proper
Noun-Name and is the nominal subject of Verb Like Particle.
.
This initiates the predicate of the sentence beginning
with Verb Like Particle. Prefixed Particle لَ
is a "distanced away-اللام المزحلقة" emphatic particle, rendering further certainty to the
predicate. The suffixed preposition indicates a subset, one constituent element-unit
of the whole class of:
,
which is definite Passive Participle of Form-IV relating to Verbal
Noun اِرْسَالٌ; sound plural; meaning the
sent ones/caused to perform and act as the Messengers.
: It
is adverb of time indicating the point in
time of incident. It thus literally means: "Know the fact that
that Yunus
[alai'his'slaam]
was performing the assignment as one of the sent Messengers
at the point in time
when----".
The point in time is when this happened:
.
It is a Perfect Verb; Third person; singular; masculine;
intransitive; Subject pronoun
hidden, referring back to Yunus
[alai'his'slaam].
The verb is made from the Root " ء ب ق".
It is used in the Grand Qur'aan only once. Therefore, we will have to rely
upon the Lexicographers to correctly perceive its meanings with the help of
other words used by the Natives/Arabs originating from this Root.
The basic perception infolded in the Root, in the
words of Ibne Faris [died 1005] is:
يدلُّ على إباق العبد، والتشدُّد في الأمر
;
That it leads to the perception of escaping of the
employee, or servant; and huskiness, sternness, hardness in the matter.
In combination, it reflects escaping-leaving aside
the assignment by the employee with husky, stern, and disappointed feel.
Lane's Lexicon transcribes it as escaping-going away of a person
without being induced to do so by his master, for reason of fear or
severity of work.. It is used for a she-camel when she denies her milk.
Therefore, the sentence:
literally means: "Know the fact; Yunus
[alai'his'slaam]
was performing assignment as one of the sent Messengers;
when
he
abandoned-absconded-ran";
The verb:
indicates
movement, going away from one location to another location. Where did he run
away from location of his assignment/area of responsibility/performing as the
Messenger of Allah the Exalted? It is told:
It is a prepositional phrase + Adjectival Phrase. The
preposition:
signifies movement-exertion towards an object or a place being approached.
: a definite noun means the ship/boat and its adjectival portrayal is with a
definite Passive Participle
,
i.e. the Ship/Boat in which the passengers have already embarked making it
laden/fully occupied-filled.
Allah the Exalted narrates the scenes in the Grand
Qur'aan with the choice of words that the listener and reader could
visualize the actual scene in a manner as if he is observing the actual
happening. The words depict for us that Yunus
[alai'his'slaam],
while performing the assignment as Messenger, is running away from his nation and
assigned job in a state of feel of severity, reflective of anger/heavy
heartedness-disappointment for unresponsiveness to his assigned mission
abandoning his nation.
Moreover, we see that he is running towards the anchored
ship which is fully embarked reflecting that it is about to depart/sail. What
would be the natural effect of this feel and running from the city to a
particular point of sea shore where ships/boats are anchored?
It is obviously understandable and is our veryday
experience that it will cause anxiety, tiredness/haggardly, sweating, dehydration, exhausted and
thirsty. The effect of the activity that day also caused this:
:
It is strange and I find it most disturbing and beyond
comprehension as to why the majority of translators erroneously saw and found in
this verb as [معاذ الله سبحانه تعالى] Yunus
alai'his'slaam,
betting with the passengers of the ship and loosing the bet against all of them,
and then gets thrown into the sea by the winners. They all seem to have thought
that it suffices to merely plagiarize what was stated in earlier
Exegeses.
Strangely, it
was not noticed that Verb:
has prefixed Particle
فَ
which denotes the sequence and effect of that cause which
precedes it, and that is his running towards the
ship in a distressed state of mind and heart causing him to abandon his nation.
It was also ignored that the Verb is intransitive,
and there is no objective complement in the text.
The Intransitive Form-III Verb does not signify mutuality of action. The
Form-III structure of Verb will always have a transformative meanings, causative
to be noun/active participle.
The Root of the Verb is: "س
ھ
م" wherein the primary signification infolded, according to well known
Lexicographers like Ibne Faris, Wehr Cowan, Lane and others, is that of
alteration in the colour of the face, someone smitten or effected by the hot
wind, with earnest mien, grave faced. It signifies a state of camels when they
feel heated and extremely thirsty.
His disappointment for unresponsive attitude of his
nation leading to his decision of abandoning them, coupled with running from city
to Sea Port, caused him to become a symbol of that reflected by this verb: tired,
exhausted, heated/high blood pressure, thirsty, grim.
Although the description of the actual scene is
independently quite lucid for visualization, the cause of acquiring this state
is also evident from earlier information given about this scene of actual
happening;
And "The Host of the Fish"
[Yunus alai'his'slaam]
when he
moved/walked away
in the state of a person who is
in the grip of heightened feeling of anger/heavy heartedness.
[Refer 21:87]
Please note
the difference of verb used here with:
We have watched through the
picturesque description of the episode that in the grip of heightened
feeling of anger/heavy heartedness Yunus
[alai'his'slaam]
is
running away
from his nation towards the Sea Port to embark a particular ship which
has since been embarked by the passengers; and is therefore almost ready
to sail off. The verb and description of the embarked state of ship
shows us the cause of running, i.e. apprehension of missing it if not
reached the Port in time of its departure. We have visualized by the
verb:
that this state of mind and physical exertion of running to catch a
ready to depart ship has exhausted him feeling weak, heated, and
thirsty. What was next effect of all this? We are informed:
.
Here also, the deficient verb reflective of
becoming in a particular state is preceded by
prefixed Particle
فَ
which denotes the sequence and effect of that cause which
precedes it.
However, it also indicates presence of a cause which could
be gathered from following clauses. The deficient verb signifies the
state of being and the hidden singular masculine subject refers back to Yunus
[alai'his'slaam].
Thereat, what was his state of being?
:
This is a prepositional phrase relating to Predicate of preceding
deficient verb; "thereat/for reason-cause, he was in the state of
slipped ones/loosing hold of feet".
:
It
is Passive Participle relating to Root: "د ح ض" . The basic perception
infolded therein, in the words of Ibne Faris [died 1005] is:
يدلُّ على زوالٍ وزَلَق
that it leads to the perception of declining; like the
declining of the Sun towards the place of setting and then
disappearing. Lane's Lexicon mentions its basic signification as
slipping of the foot, which obviously causes the decline and falling
down; loss of stability and firmness, refutation and invalidation of an
argument. Nowhere he mentions a single word
made from this Root which might denote meanings of losing a bet or
gamble.
Yunus
[alai'his'slaam]
was fast approaching the laden ship; which shows it was about to leave,
in an exhausted and disturbed state of heart and mind for which
reason his foot slipped and he was there in a state of declined and
disappeared ones. The cause and effect particle also shows as if the
ship started sailing when he was about to foot the embarkation whereby
his foot slipped and he fell down. Adding words like "in/within the Sea"
would have been superfluous and waste of words since the place of
disappearance is evident from the immediately following sentence. Where did he fell
slipping and ultimately got
disappeared from the scene?
Thereat/for reason of his
slipping and falling in the Sea, the male Whale swallowed him whole,
Prefixed Particle
فَ
denotes the sequence and effect of that cause which
precedes it. It was this state
:
"one who had slipped and disappeared declining in
the Sea".
:
The Whale is the subject of Perfect Verb with which the suffixed
singular masculine pronoun is fronted object of verb referring back to Yunus
[alai'his'slaam].
:
The Verb is of Form-VIII.
This informs us
not just that he swallowed him;
it has a specific structure with addition of consonants and vowels
adding connotations and further meanings to the original Form-I verb. It
shows us that the Whale was not present exactly at the spot of falling
and at point in time of this incident. This Form of Verb has reflexive causative
meanings even in transitive ones; and indicative of more effort and
exertion performed by its subject. The Whale locating the position of
prey; by Echolocation, perhaps erroneously judging it as
cephalopods [an invertebrate ocean animal with a large head and
tentacles-Squid main food item of
Sperm Whale],
in response to usual buzzes, rushed towards him and then just mouthful
swallowed him.
It is interesting that the Verb is masculine, third person singular.
Some male did this act. Matured and adult Sperm Whales are ordinarily in
higher altitudes while the youngsters remain in tropical and subtropical
area with feminine pods and are not able to dive very deeply.
This swallowing happened
when having slipped into the Sea, he was in this
circumstantial state:
o
While he was a lingerer,
sluggish awaiting and expecting help for rescue.
: This particle
also serves to link the circumstantial clause.
This describes the state when he was swallowed
whole by the Whale.
:
It is
Personal pronoun referring to
Yunus
[alai'his'slaam],
and is the subject of nominal sentence.
: It
is the Predicate of nominal sentence, and is
active participle of Form-IV having a built in masculine pronoun
matching the subject of sentence. Its Root is "ل و م".
According to Ibne Faris {died 1005], it has two signification, to quote
his own words:
تدلُّ إحداهما على العَتْب والعَذْل، والأخرى على الإبطاء.,
That one of its meanings give us the perception of rebuke, censure,
blame, reprehend, while the other reflects
a state of tardiness, sluggish, slowdown.
Moreover, classical Lexicon:
لسان العرب
also
indicates its meanings as awaiting in expectation and delay, linger the
matter.
This Active Participle
is used twice
in the Qur'aan, in the same three worded sentence; and one has no option
but to praise Allah the Exalted for the choice of words, which reflect
all aspects of the situation and persons for whom this was used. The
scene at both places is same. Here we see this Active Participle slipped
in the Sea and is a symbol of tardiness, sluggish, slowdown, awaiting
and expecting help for rescue. He was also earlier late/delayed in
catching the boat to embark, resulting in slipping into sea. The other
place; where this Active Participle is used, describes the circumstantial state of Pharaoh when he was drowning
in the sea.
[Same information in same words in
28:40]
Consequentially, We seized him/Pharaoh
and his troops, whereupon We caused them thrown
[from over the bridge] as worthless into the Gulf
Suez;
o
While he/Pharaoh was a lingerer,
sluggish awaiting and expecting help for rescue. [51:40]
[Moreover he was the blame-taker
since he took the initiative of putting foot on the bridge in his
madness to capture the crossed over Bani Israel]
The perception and
signification infolded in the word, on all four, juxtaposes on the state
and attitude of Pharaoh. He had much lingered behind and delayed in
accepting the evident truth, he was about to drown, his pronouncement of
belief and becoming a Muslim shows his expectation of rescue, the
collapse of the bridge throwing him into the sea had already caused him
the tardiness.
What happened after the male
Sperm-Whale had swallowed him whole? We are informed:
-
Thereby,, had he not been
of those who
repetitively praise the glory of Allah the Exalted:
[37:143]
-
Certainly he would have remained part/in his belly
[as fossil] until
the Day people will be resurrected/revived. [37:144]
-
In response to his repetitive praises and awaiting help
for rescue, Our Majesty caused him thrown on the open shore, while he was
feeling tired and anguished;
[because of jerks and rubbing inside the belly of a
swimming whale] [37:145]
-
Where We had grown upon it a tree from species gourd
[perhaps its beverage was effective for quick
recovery]. [37:146]
-
And We sent him to a hundred thousand people or they
were
increasing more, [37:147]
-
Thereat they believed and We
granted them the comforts/sustenance for a
while/term. [37:148]
It may be noted that the same verb:
is
used earlier for Pharaoh and his troops for throwing them as worthless.
For the Whale, Yunus
[alai'his'slaam]
was a worthless and irritant prey in his stomach
who was swallowed, by a wrong judgment of
echolocation technique. He was thrown on the open shore in tired and
anguish condition.
:
It
is Adjective resembling participle reflecting a
man in tired and anguish condition, both physical and mental. Its
meanings are elaborated by use of another word:
Passive Participle,
describing his state when he was inside the belly of Whale:
While he had become distressed
and anguished. [Refer 68:49]
[Musa
alai'his'slaam left his nation earlier
than appointed day, with full confidence that they are following him
earnestly, resulting his nation strayed by Sa'mri; and the
earlier without permission leaving of Yunus alai'his'slaam
resulted in his nation's believing on his return and seeking forgiveness-10:98;
37:147
and were pardoned]
