Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:
(مقاييس اللغة)
الطَّاءُ وَالْمِيمُ وَالثَّاءُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى مَسِ الشَّيْءِ
وَيُقَالُ: طَمَثَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَرْأَةَ: مَسَّهَا بِجِمَاعٍ.
That it leads to the perception of touching the thing. And it is said when the man has touched her wife for sexual intercourse.
Lane Lexicon: He, or it, touched a thing: (AA, S, K, * TA:) said in relation to anything that is touched: He devirginated her, (Fr, S, Mgh, Msb, K,) namely, a woman, (Mgh,) or his wife, (Msb,) causing her to bleed;
