Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

(مقاييس اللغة)

الْعَيْنُ وَالتَّاءُ وَالْحَرْفُ الْمُعْتَلُّ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى اسْتِكْبَار

That it leads to the perception of aspiring grandeur, magnanimity.

(لسان العرب)

اسْتَكْبَرَ وجاوَزَ الحَدَّ،

 It signifies someone aspiring grandeur, magnanimity, and crossing the limit.

Classical Lexicons

  • Afterwards, We will certainly drag him out, from every group of them, who was staunchly rebellious to an extreme against Ar'Reh'maan the Exalted. [19:69]

  • And they (members of ruling elite of Mecca) who even desire not meeting Our Majesty said to people —

  • اور(مکہ مکرمہ میں ہونے والی یہ گفتگو بھی جان لو)انہوں نے جو ہمارے حضورپیش ہونے کی خواہش ہی نہیں رکھتے لوگوں سے کہا۔۔

  • "Why is it Angels have not descended upon us or we see with our eyes our Sustainer Lord?".

  • ‘‘کیا بات ہے کہ ملائکہ کو ہمارے اوپر  نہیں اتارا گیایا کیا وجہ ہے کہ ہم اپنے رب کوآشکارہ انداز میں کھلی آنکھوں سے نہیں دیکھتے’’

  • Certainly they aspired for pride of grandeur within their selves; and they behaved insolently showing extreme insolence. [25:21]

  • یقین جانووہ خود اپنی ذات میں  اس لمحےعظمت کافخر چاہتے تھے۔اور انہوں نے گستاخ انداز اختیار کیا،انتہائی گستاخانہ حدیں پار کرنے کے انداز میں۔

  • Thereat they rebelled against the command of the Sustainer Lord of them whereupon the thunderbolt seized them while they were watching it. [51:44]

  • And there were many habitats who disobediently went away from the Command of their Sustainer Lord and His Messengers —

  • Thereat Our Majesty took them to account, nabbing accountability —

  • And We punished them with a terrible unfamiliar affliction. [65:08]

  • Or who is this one that will provide you sustenance if He the Exalted (Ar'Reh'maan) held back His sustenance?

  • Nay, there is none, but the fact is they persisted/kept rising in brimming out of bounds in defiance and running away aversively.. [67:21]

  • And as for A'ad civilization is concerned; they were annihilated with a creaking furious wind, exorbitantly immoderate — [69:06]
