Ibn Faris [died 1005] stated:

الراء والباء والصاد أصلٌ واحدٌ يدلُّ على الانتظار

That it leads to the perception of consciously waiting, expectation.

Lane Lexicon : A thing, or an affair, or an event, put me in expectation. 5 تربّص  He expected; or awaited: he tarried; or tarried expecting.

Classical Lexicons

to sit in waiting, to bide one's time, to be on the look out, to lurk, to waylay, to ambush, to wait for something to befall someone. Refraining from certain action for a certain period.

 

  • Period of self-restraint is restricted to four months for conclusive decision for those husbands who undertake an oath ceasing performing intimate matrimonial relation with their wives.

  • Thereby, if they (husbands) compromised and re-established matrimonial relation:

  • In that case Allah the Exalted is indeed Oft-forgiving-overlooking faults, the Merciful. [2:226]


  • Take note; in case of proclamation of husband's firm decision of suspending the Matrimonial Bond in times after menstruation for its eventual revoking: the isolated Wives should honestly and sincerely exercise self restraint from deciding their future course for a time period of multiple menstrual discharges at three successive menstruation periods.

  • Moreover, it is is not permissible for them (the alienated Wives) to withhold disclosing that which Allah the Exalted has since created in their Wombs. They will not withhold this information if they have truly been believing in Allah the Exalted and the Last Day [since this has social-moral as well legal implications, as mentioned elsewhere in the Qur’ān].

  • And take note; their respective husbands have greater right in reverting them (alienated/divorced wives) back to wedlock (original position) during this case. This right is subject to the condition if those husbands have decided to straighten/reconcile matters.

  • Take note; a similar right like the one which husbands have upon them [right of reversion after pronouncement and revocation of matrimonial bond] is also the prerogative for such wives [next time, since divorce can happen only twice in the married life] in accordance with the known norms of the society.

  • However, a priority-precedence in exercise of same right for each of two is to men over them.

  • Be mindful, Allah the Exalted is Pervasively dominant and the Infinitely Just Supreme Administrator of the created realm, visible and invisible. [2:228]

  • اوراس حقیقت سے باخبر رہو؛ اللہ تعالیٰ  دائمی،ہر لمحہ،ہرمقام پرحتماً غالب ہیں۔ اور بدرجہ اتم انصاف پسند تمام موجود کائنات کے فرمانروا اور تمام پنہاں کو جاننے والے ہیں۔


  • This is about those men who are caused detachment - parting from amongst you people (because of natural-accidental death, incidental-planned murder, or slaughter in the cause/war of Allah the Exalted) in circumstances that they are leaving behind their wives —

  • They (respective wives left behind) should wait-restrain their selves, honestly and sincerely, for a period of four lunar months and ten days till the eleventh lunar night.

  • Thereat, when they (wives left behind) have elapsed-crossed over the last moment of their prescribed duration, thereby there is no objection upon you people regards what these women decide-act about their selves in accordance with the known norms of the society.

  • Remain mindful that Allah the Exalted is aware of all acts which you people keep doing. [2:234]


  • These Muna'fi'qeen sit back and wait for outcome of your matter wishing a calamity end. Thereupon, if the victory is decided for you as grace from Allah the Exalted: They said: "Were we not siding with you?"

  • And if the the luck was for the non-believers; they (Muna'fi'qeen) said to them (non-believers): "Did we purposely not restrain ourselves gaining control upon you and did we not make you impenetrable from the Believers? 

  • Thereby, for dispensing justice Allah the Exalted will decide between you people on the Day of Rising.

  • And Allah the Exalted would not let there be a way for the deniers over the believers. [4:141]


  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce: "If it were your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your spouses and your clans —

  • And the wealth that you have rightly or wrongly acquired diligently, and the business/commerce you people apprehend recession in it; and the residences you are delighted with:

  • These are more attractive and dearer to you people than Allah the Exalted and His Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam]and than striving for the cause-High road of Him the Exalted:

  • Thereby, wait remain absorbed in their love until such time Allah the Exalted proclaims His decision-command.

  • Remain cognizant, Allah the Exalted guides not the people who are aberrant-promise breakers and transgress prescribed bounds. [9:24]


  • You say to them: "Do you people await for us but either of the two most desirable eventualities?

  • And we await with you that Allah the Exalted might inflict you people punishment, either directly by Him the Exalted or through our hands.

  • Hence you people wait, indeed with you we are awaiting. [9:52]


  • Know it; some of the Arabized foreign settlers considers it a forced liability what he spends; and wishfully awaits for a turn of bad times for you people.

  •  Whirlpool of the evil is overarching upon them.

  • Remain cautious; Allah the Exalted is eternally the Listener; the Absolute Knowledgeable. [9:98]


  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce, "Each one is waiting, therefore, you people wait [for that moment] —

  • Whereby you people will soon know who are companions of the even course and who has guided himself aright. [20:135]


  • Not is he but a man deluded and hallucinated —

  • Therefore, you people wait-tolerate him for a little while." [23:25]


  • Or do they say to people, "He is a poet, the one for whom We wait with content the frustrating disquieting time". [52:30]


  • You the Messenger [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] pronounce, "You people keep waiting, I am amongst those who are waiting". [52:31]


  • They will actively call them loudly, "Were we not amongst you people".

  • They replied, "Of course you were amongst us, but you people irked yourselves and purposely kept awaiting and you purposely lurched in double mindedness.

  • And the desires and conjectural false hopes deceived you people—

  • Until the Command of Allah the Exalted arrived —

  • And the Deceiver put you in deceptive delusion about Allah the Exalted. [57:14]
